Film 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan Ready to Bring Warmth & the Meaning of Mutual Support to Audiences Across Indonesia Starting January 23, 2025

Jakarta, January 17, 2024 – From writer and director Yandy Laurens, comes his third film titled 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan, which will be released simultaneously in cinemas across Indonesia starting January 23, 2025. When the trailer was released in mid-December 2024, this family drama, produced and presented by Mandela Pictures and Cerita Films, received enthusiastic responses and became one of the most anticipated films of 2025. When it was announced that the film would premiere as the closing film of the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF19) in Yogyakarta, all the tickets sold out within a few hours. This success continued with a special screening held on January 11-12, where tickets for the screening in 7 different cities were also sold out. Audiences expressed their warmth and emotional reactions to 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan and many stated they would bring their relatives to watch it again when it officially releases in cinemas on January 23.

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan, adapted from a story by Arswendo Atmowiloto, tells the story of MOKO (Chicco Kurniawan), a young architect who is fighting to achieve his dreams. He suddenly has to become a “single parent” to his nephews and nieces. He faces various challenges in life, having to choose between his love life with MAURIN (Amanda Rawles), his career, or his nephews and nieces. His nieces and nephews also face their own struggles. WOKO (Fatih Unru), NINA (Freya JKT48), ANO (Ahmad Nadif), and AIS (Kawai Labiba) each face different challenges. 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan presents a family story that is relevant to all of us in today’s generation.

“There’s a shift in family dynamics when someone who is not a father takes on one of the father’s duties, which is providing for the family. Both the person helping and the one being helped feel the awkwardness of it. These awkward feelings then lead to thoughts that are often considered taboo to express. This film tries to create space for these things to be spoken,” said writer and director Yandy Laurens about his hopes for the film. “There’s a part of Kak Moko in each of our families, in every circle of friends we have. I hope this film can help reconnect families that have drifted apart due to things that were never said.”

As an adaptation, 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan also pays homage to its previous TV series version with a simple yet emotionally powerful scene where Moko and his nephews and nieces sing the song “Jangan Risaukan” accompanied by the sound of an old piano in their home. It reminds us that happiness doesn’t have to come from expensive events, but can still feel luxurious in the memories it creates.

“The idea planted by Arswendo Atmowiloto in the TV series 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan, which was then developed by Yandy Laurens into a feature film, brings warmth, emotion, and laughter. These feelings were constantly present throughout the process of making this film. I hope that spirit will also be well-received by audiences because this film talks about our daily lives: the people closest to us whom we call family,” said Cerita Films producer, Suryana Paramita.

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan also stars Fatih Unru, Freya JKT48, Ahmad Nadif, Kawai Labiba, Ringgo Agus Rahman, Niken Anjani, Kiki Narendra, and Maudy Koesnaedi. The film is supported by investors such as Legacy Pictures, Visual Media Studio, Bapak Bobby Mulani, Masih Belajar Pictures, Rhaya Flicks, Infia, Volix Pictures, and StickEarn.

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan is also proudly supported by Wardah as the film’s sponsor, with Indomaret and Yummy Choice as promotional partners.

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan is ready to warm the hearts of Indonesian families starting January 23, 2025, in cinemas across Indonesia. Follow the latest updates about the family drama 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan (1K7P) on the official Instagram accounts @1kakak7ponakan, @mandela_pictures, and @cerita_films.
