ANGGA DWIMAS SASONGKO RETURNS TO DIRECTING WITH HIS LATEST ACTION PROJECT: RATU MALAKA

Cannes, May 15, 2025 – After two years of focusing on leading the transformation of Visinema and developing JUMBO, the Indonesian animated film that marked a new milestone in audience reach and made a positive impact on the national film industry, Angga Dwimas Sasongko returns to the director’s chair with a greater and more defined vision: to build the future of Indonesian action cinema.

In a market dominated by horror and comedy, the action genre has yet to reach its full potential as a commercially successful category. Drawing from his experience directing Wiro Sableng, Ben & Jody, 13 Bom di Jakarta, and Mencuri Raden Saleh, Angga believes that this genre possesses untapped narrative, visual, and emotional strength.

As the director of Mencuri Raden Saleh, the highest-grossing Indonesian action film of all time with over 2.3 million viewers, Angga sees action not merely as chase scenes and explosions, but as a cinematic space to create spectacle, iconic characters, and widely resonant narratives. With his latest project, RATU MALAKA, he is not only returning as a filmmaker but also continuing his role as a key driver in expanding Indonesia’s storytelling ecosystem—broadening the genre spectrum to be more competitive both locally and internationally.“It’s time to direct a film that reignites my deepest instincts as a storyteller. After successfully transforming Visinema and seeing JUMBO surpass its targets, I’m back in the director’s seat to pursue something bigger: an action film with soul, blood, and a fiercely local spirit. RATU MALAKA will be my fifth film in this genre, and will embody all the lessons I’ve learned from Wiro Sableng, Ben & Jody, Mencuri Raden Saleh, and 13 Bom di Jakarta. But beyond that, it’s a personal and monumental work,” explains Angga Dwimas Sasongko.

Announcement from Cannes & International Collaboration

Angga officially announced this project at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes 2025, as part of an initiative to expand production ecosystems and foster cross-country creative collaboration. He is currently exploring strategic partnerships with production companies from South Korea and the United States to support large-scale international production and broaden the film’s global distribution.
