Jakarta, September 8, 2025 — Following the success of the horror film Lembayung (2024), which marked Baim Wong’s directorial debut and attracted over 1.6 million viewers, Baim Wong is back with his latest horror film, Sukma, set to shock audiences starting September 11, 2025, in theaters across Indonesia.
Sukma follows the story of Arini (played by Luna Maya) and her family as they move to a small town to start a new life. However, their new beginning turns into a nightmare after they discover an ancient mirror in a hidden room.
A series of strange occurrences begin. Unexpected sounds and eerie apparitions leave Arini anxious for the safety of her family. Things get even more unsettling with the appearance of a mysterious figure, Ibu Sri (played by Christine Hakim). As time runs out, Arini must uncover the past and the mystery behind the mirror—before it’s too late and she loses everything.
Sukma offers a horror experience that stands out. It combines classic jumpscares with powerful dramatic scenes, performed by an A-list cast. The film also explores a compelling theme: the desire for beauty and immortality that many women long for, with the mirror symbolizing the thin line between eternity and imperfection.
In addition to directing, Baim Wong also serves as a producer alongside David Wong and co-wrote the screenplay with Ratih Kumala. Sukma is the third feature film produced by Tiger Wong Entertainment.“Balancing commercial appeal and artistic vision was something I really wanted to maintain in this film. As a horror film, of course there are jumpscares, but Sukma is more than that. It tells a complex story about beauty and the desire for immortality—an anxiety many women feel—alongside a love story that will surprise audiences. Sukma is a different kind of horror, with the mirror as its central element. There will be many scenes that catch viewers off guard,” said Baim Wong, the film’s producer, director, and writer.
Sukma stars Luna Maya, Christine Hakim, Oka Antara, Fedi Nuril, Krishna Keitaro, Kimberly Ryder, Anna Jobling, Asri Welas, Amanda Soekasah, Giovani Tobing, Dazeline Reynand, Kiano Tiger Wong, and Kenzo Eldrago Wong.
In this film, Luna Maya took on a challenge from Baim Wong to perform without makeup for the sake of her role. This is the first time Luna Maya has worked with Baim Wong as a director. For Luna, the film also addresses issues that are close to many women’s lives.“Working in the showbiz industry, the pressure on women to stay youthful is very real. There are always comments from netizens about physical appearance and such. But in Sukma, I feel there’s a reason behind why Ibu Sri is obsessed with staying young and why she desires Arini’s youth. That’s the mystery that will unfold,” said Luna Maya.
Christine Hakim, who plays Ibu Sri and was also involved in the script development, said that shooting Sukma pushed her out of her comfort zone.“Filming Sukma was one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever done. There’s a battle scene set in a cave, and one scene in particular that I think will truly shock audiences. There were many risks, and without God’s protection, I wouldn’t have had the courage to take them. I had to really step out of my comfort zone,” said Christine Hakim.
The film also features intense scenes between Fedi Nuril and Oka Antara, including a fight scene as the mystery starts to unravel. Oka Antara, who trusted Baim Wong’s vision from the beginning and had worked with him previously in Lembayung, believes Baim has leveled up with Sukma.“This is Baim’s most philosophical film. The way he uses the mirror as a symbol of terror—and how every reflection shows something different—is brilliant. He’s really leveled up. And I enjoyed the fight scene,” said Oka Antara.
Fedi Nuril, who takes on his first horror role in Sukma, said it didn’t take long for him to accept Baim’s offer. For Fedi, Baim is a director with a strong sense of idealism and a unique method. He also heard positive things from fellow actors who had previously worked with Baim on Berbalas Kejam and Lembayung.
In Sukma, Fedi takes on the challenge of playing a character with schizophrenia.“When I read the script, I was immediately interested. Baim didn’t have to convince me hard to join this project. Plus, my character demanded more from me. I had to do research with a psychiatrist to understand the experiences, symptoms, and everyday realities of people living with schizophrenia,” said Fedi Nuril.
Catch the terrifying and mysterious journey into the world of mirrors and shocking drama in Baim Wong’s latest work, Sukma, in Indonesian cinemas starting September 11, 2025!
