Pangku Wins 4 Awards at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival

Busan, September 25, 2025 – Exciting news comes from Busan, South Korea! Pangku, the directorial debut of Reza Rahadian, has won four awards at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The film Pangku received the KB Vision Audience Award (KB 비전 관객상), FIPRESCI Award (국제영화비평가연맹(FIPRESCI)상), Bishkek International Film Festival-Central Asia Cinema Award (비슈케크국제영화제-중앙아시아영화상), and the Face of the Future Award (얼터너티브유니버스 – 차세대영화인상).

“From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank the Busan International Film Festival 2025 and everyone involved for the recognition given to our film. Pangku was born from the collective work and collaboration of the cast and crew, from pre-production until today,” said Pangku’s director Reza Rahadian in his award acceptance speech.

“I hope this film continues to live on in people’s hearts and inspires others with the story of a woman who lives her life simply, for her own happiness, her family, and her community,” Reza added.

At BIFF 2025, Pangku competed in the Vision Asia program and also marked its world premiere at the festival. The KB Vision Award is given to an Asian film in the Vision Asia program that receives the highest number of audience votes. The FIPRESCI Award is presented to Asian films that demonstrate outstanding artistic merit and innovative talent.

The Bishkek International Film Festival-Central Asia Cinema Award is a prize presented by the Bishkek International Film Festival in cooperation with the Busan International Film Festival and supported by the Department of Cinematography under the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Youth Policy of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, for one selected Asian film.

The Face of the Future Award, supported by the Thai creative and social enterprise Alternative Universe Co., Ltd., is also awarded to an Asian film in the Vision Asia program that represents the future of Asian cinema.

Pangku will be released in Indonesian cinemas starting November 6, 2025. The film is produced by Gambar Gerak, a production house founded by Reza Rahadian and Arya Ibrahim, both of whom served as producers for this film. Arya produced the film alongside Gita Fara. The screenplay was written by Reza Rahadian and Felix K. Nesi.

Pangku previously went through various development stages and received several recognitions. It began with the White Light Post-Production Award at JAFF Future Project (JFP) 2024, was selected to be presented at the 23rd Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF23), and was chosen as one of the five film projects to win the HAF Goes to Cannes Program, later presented at the Marché du Film or Cannes Film Market during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Pangku was also selected to participate in Far East in Progress, Focus Asia 2025 at the Far East Film Festival 2025, and received post-production funding from the Red Sea Fund of the Red Sea Film Foundation.

Synopsis

Sartika (Claresta Taufan), a young pregnant woman, moves away from her hometown in hopes of giving her child a better future. She meets Maya (Christine Hakim), a coffee shop owner on the northern coastal highway (Pantura), who takes care of Sartika and helps her deliver her baby. After giving birth, Maya persuades her to work by serving coffee while sitting on customers’ laps. One day, Sartika meets and falls in love with Hadi (Fedi Nuril), a fish distributor truck driver. Will Sartika find her happiness?
