After nearly three years away from the screen, Nam Joo-hyuk is officially making his highly anticipated return with Netflix’s upcoming supernatural period drama The East Palace. The actor revealed that the project became meaningful to him even before completing his military service, making it the perfect choice for his comeback.
During the production presentation held at Fairmont Ambassador Seoul in Yeouido, Seoul, on June 8, Nam Joo-hyuk shared his thoughts on why he decided to take on the role and what attracted him to the mysterious world of The East Palace.
A New Beginning After Military Service
The East Palace marks Nam Joo-hyuk first acting project following his military discharge and his return to television after his appearance in Disney+ Vigilante in 2023.
The actor explained that the script for The East Palace was the first project he received while serving in the military. Having more time for reflection and creativity during that period allowed him to connect deeply with the story.“It was the first script I received while in the military, and I could let my imagination run wild,” Nam Joo-hyuk shared. “The military provided ample time for creativity, so I read it with great enjoyment. The palace’s mystery flowed naturally, and I wanted to embody Gucheon with all my being.”
For Nam Joo-hyuk, the unique atmosphere and supernatural elements of the story were key reasons he chose the project as his comeback role.
Transforming Into Gucheon, a Spirit World Wanderer
In The East Palace, Nam Joo-hyuk plays Gucheon, a mysterious figure who has the ability to cross between the human world and the spirit realm.
Armed with the power to defeat ghosts with a sword, Gucheon enters the royal palace to investigate a strange incident and uncover a terrifying world hidden beneath the surface of the kingdom.
The role presents a new challenge for Nam Joo-hyuk, who has previously showcased his versatility through various genres, including Vigilante, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, Start-Up, The School Nurse Files, and Brilliant Eyes.
With action sequences, supernatural conflicts, and emotional complexity, Gucheon offers the actor an opportunity to explore a darker and more intense side of his performance.
Preparing for Intense Action Scenes
To portray Gucheon convincingly, Nam Joo-hyuk underwent extensive preparation for the drama’s action scenes.
The actor revealed that consistent training was essential to mastering the character’s combat style.“Practice was the only answer,” he explained. “Before and during filming, I attended action school to coordinate fight scenes and adjusted them on set. Once my body got used to the movements, I could act freely on set.”
His dedication to the physical demands of the role highlights his commitment to creating an authentic action performance while maintaining the emotional depth expected from the character.
A Powerful Team Behind the Supernatural Drama
The East Palace brings together an impressive creative team known for crafting unique and atmospheric genre stories.
The series is written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, the writers behind supernatural dramas such as Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest. It is directed by Choi Jung-kyu, whose previous works include The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody.
The drama follows Gucheon and palace maid Saeng-gang—played by Roh Yoon-seo—as they investigate a mysterious curse haunting the Eastern Palace after being summoned by the King, portrayed by Cho Seung-woo.
Combining royal intrigue, supernatural horror, mystery, and emotional storytelling, the series aims to deliver a darker and more cinematic take on the historical drama genre.
