Behind Aku Sebelum Aku: The Cast and Creators Share the Heart Behind Netflix Emotional New Indonesian Film

Netflix is set to premiere its latest Indonesian Original film, Aku Sebelum Aku, on July 16, 2026, bringing audiences around the world a heartfelt story about family, identity, and emotional healing. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gina S. Noer, the film explores the hidden struggles behind success and the importance of rediscovering oneself before expectations and pressure take over.
Starring Bima Sena and Ringgo Agus Rahman, Aku Sebelum Aku follows the journey of a high-achieving teenager who wins a prestigious school competition, only to suffer a panic attack that changes everything. As the pressure from his ambitious father intensifies, he is forced to confront unresolved family wounds, understand his past, and find his true identity before their relationship falls apart.

During Netflix Family Festival 2026: World of Wonder press conference in Jakarta, Gina S. Noer shared the deeply personal inspiration behind the film.

According to the award-winning writer and director, the story began with a simple yet profound question from her second child, who has always been fascinated by history. At the age of 14, her son asked his grandmother—who was born in 1945—what it felt like to be born before Indonesia gained independence and to grow up during the country’s earliest years.

That conversation led Gina to realize how little she truly knew about her own family’s history and how the legacy of colonialism continues to shape family relationships today.

“This film is personal to me,” Gina explained. “It is for everyone who wants to understand themselves better, who wants to give their family another chance to love each other, and who believes that history is more than something we memorize in school. I hope it encourages us to become a family that supports one another.”

Actress Prastiwi Dwiarti, who plays Ambu Asih, Jati’s mother, described her character as someone whose love is expressed through quiet presence rather than words.
She explained that playing Ambu Asih taught her about the strength of mothers who continue to stand beside their families without demanding attention. Rather than speaking often, Ambu Asih chooses to become the safest place her husband and son can always return to.

The Importance of Teachers and Community
Comedian and actor Aming, who portrays teachers Pak Zai and Pak Juned, emphasized that children need more than just parental support to grow into confident individuals.
He believes that schools, teachers, and the wider community play equally important roles in helping young people discover who they are. The film, he said, reminds parents of the importance of guiding their children emotionally instead of expecting them to handle life’s challenges alone.

Love Creates Strong Foundations
Poppy Sovia, who plays Asa’s mother, reflected on how the film reshaped her perspective on parenting.
She noted that Asa grows into a compassionate and resilient young person because she is raised in an environment filled with affection and emotional security. That strong foundation allows her to face unexpected difficulties with confidence.

Discovering Honesty Through Asa
For Widuri Puteri, who plays Asa, portraying the character became a journey of self-discovery.
She described Asa as someone who values honesty above all else and constantly searches for the truth. Throughout rehearsals, filming, and post-production, Widuri spent countless hours discussing the character with Gina S. Noer, a process that ultimately encouraged her to become more honest with herself and with others.

A Love Letter for Those Choosing to Heal
Gina S. Noer hopes that Aku Sebelum Aku will resonate with anyone facing difficult moments in life.
She describes the film as a love letter to people who choose healing over despair and growth over fear. In today’s fast-moving world, Gina believes stories like this offer audiences a rare opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.

“Stories help us understand what it means to be human,” she said. “Films allow us to see life with greater empathy and reflection.”

An Award-Winning Team
Aku Sebelum Aku reunites some of Indonesia’s most respected talents. Gina S. Noer is widely recognized as the writer, producer, and director behind acclaimed films Keluarga Cemara and Dua Garis Biru, earning multiple Citra Awards for her screenwriting.
Meanwhile, Ringgo Agus Rahman, a two-time Citra Award-winning actor, delivers what promises to be another powerful performance as a father struggling to balance love and ambition.

Produced by Wahana Kreator Nusantara, Aku Sebelum Aku will premiere globally and exclusively on Netflix on July 16, 2026.

With its emotional storytelling, compelling performances, and thoughtful exploration of family relationships, mental health, and self-discovery, Aku Sebelum Aku is shaping up to be one of Indonesia’s most anticipated film releases of the year.
