Horror Comedy Invites Audiences in 22 Cities to Watch Early Before Its October 1 Release
JAKARTA, September 24, 2026 — What happens when a ghost refuses to leave, while an entire apartment community refuses to move?
That chaos is at the heart of Warga Rusun 609, a new horror comedy directed by Herwin Novianto and written by Upi, which is inviting audiences in 22 cities to experience the film ahead of its nationwide release.
Before officially hitting Indonesian cinemas on October 1, 2026, Warga Rusun 609 will hold early screenings on September 26–27, giving audiences a chance to meet the residents of Apartment 609—and the ghost haunting them.
The trouble begins when the spirit of Bunga, played by Ranty Maria, returns to Room 609 just as the apartment’s residents are facing the threat of relocation.
The problem? The ghost won’t leave. And the residents don’t want to move.
One Ghost, One Promise, and a Whole Lot of Chaos
The story centers on Arka (Morgan Oey), a popular and wealthy university student whose relationship with Bunga falls apart because of a foolish bet.
After Bunga is found dead, her spirit returns and refuses to leave Room 609 until Arka fulfills her final promise.
Her presence quickly becomes a major problem for the residents, who must keep the haunting a secret from Pak Bahlil (David Nurbianto) in an attempt to prevent the apartment’s relocation plan from becoming even easier to carry out.
But dealing with one ghost turns out to be anything but simple.
Every resident has their own opinion, panic response, and method for getting rid of Bunga. Led by IBU DAMAI (Gita Bhebhita), the residents try everything they can think of to regain control.
Instead, their attempts only turn one supernatural problem into an even bigger disaster.“Bu Damai always thinks she is the one who can fix everything, but the residents actually make every problem last even longer. The fun part is that we never tried to make each character funny on their own. The comedy comes from the way they constantly interrupt, respond to, and annoy each other, just like neighbors who know each other a little too well,” said Gita Bhebhita.
When Horror Meets Neighborhood Chaos
The film brings together actors, comedians, stand-up comedians, and internet personalities, creating an ensemble with very different comedic styles.
The result is a constant clash between Bunga’s supernatural terror and the residents’ spontaneous reactions—allowing the atmosphere to shift from genuinely creepy to completely chaotic within seconds.
For director Herwin Novianto, making both genres work comes down to rhythm and timing.“Horror and comedy both depend on rhythm and timing. I wanted Bunga to remain frightening and carry a strong emotional weight, while the comedy comes from the residents taking the situation very seriously. When the actors truly believe in the situation, the humor comes naturally without having to force it,” Herwin said.
Audiences Are Already Laughing
The chaotic combination of horror and comedy has already been tested with audiences during early screenings in Jakarta and Yogyakarta on September 19–20, 2026.
According to the production team, laughter could be heard throughout the screening, particularly when the residents’ panic turned into increasingly unpredictable comments and actions.
One audience member shared their reaction on Rapi Films’ Instagram, writing:“My jaw is exhausted, I was laughing from the first scene to the last.”
Another reaction video gave the film a playful “1000/10” rating for its entertainment value.
Producer Sunil Samtani said the early response showed that Warga Rusun 609 is best experienced together with an audience.“The response from audiences in Jakarta and Yogyakarta showed that Warga Rusun 609 is at its most fun when watched together. There are moments when an entire theater becomes tense because of Bunga, only to burst into laughter because of the residents’ behavior. We want more audiences to experience the same thing with their friends, families, or even their neighbors,” said Sunil.
