What if Cinderella’s so-called “evil” stepsister was never truly the villain? Netflix is ready to turn the classic fairy tale upside down with STEPS, a new animated film arriving on November 20, featuring a star-studded voice cast and a brand-new song by JENNIE of BLACKPINK.
Forget everything you thought you knew about Cinderella’s story. In STEPS, the spotlight shifts to the stepsisters, offering a fresh perspective on a familiar fairy tale filled with magic, unexpected twists, and a kingdom in danger.
The upcoming animated adventure promises a bold reimagining of the beloved story, combining humor, fantasy, and a heartfelt journey about family, understanding, and the possibility of rewriting your own destiny.
When Cinderella’s Stepsister Takes Center Stage
For years, Cinderella’s stepsisters have been remembered as cruel characters who made her life miserable. But STEPS asks a different question: what if there is more to their story than meets the eye?
The film follows Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, who is tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow. In a desperate attempt to change her circumstances, Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother’s magical wand, with disastrous consequences.
Alongside her sister Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, Lilith throws the Royal Ball into chaos, setting off a chain of events that changes the kingdom forever.
Their actions inadvertently leave the kingdom under the control of Priscilla, voiced by Nikki Glaser, a cunning villain who appears out of nowhere and seizes the throne.
Suddenly, Lilith finds herself facing a much bigger problem than her rivalry with Cinderella. To save the kingdom, she must join forces with Cinderella, voiced by Amanda Seyfried, and embark on a dangerous adventure.
Their journey takes them through the Screaming Woods, where they must escape evil henchmen, confront motorcycle-riding trolls, and overcome a series of unpredictable obstacles.
Along the way, the two women must confront their differences and discover whether they can put their past behind them to protect the kingdom — and perhaps repair their complicated relationship.
By shifting the focus to Cinderella’s stepsister, STEPS offers a playful new take on a classic tale, reminding audiences that every story may have another side worth hearing.
JENNIE Brings New Music to the Magical Adventure
One of the biggest highlights of STEPS is its musical lineup, led by a brand-new song titled “Someone to Hold” by JENNIE of BLACKPINK.
The song will be featured on STEPS (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), scheduled for release on November 20, the same day the film premieres on Netflix.
JENNIE’s involvement adds another exciting dimension to the project, bringing her global musical appeal to an animated fantasy adventure designed to entertain audiences of different ages.
The soundtrack will also feature four original songs written and produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Justin Tranter.
Additional vocal performances come from Academy Award-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried, singer-songwriter Rose Gray — who also co-wrote songs with Tranter — and EMEI.
Completing the musical experience is an original score by Academy Award-winning composer Kris Bowers, known for his work on projects including Bridgerton.
With original songs, a celebrated composer, and an internationally recognized pop star, the soundtrack promises to be an essential part of the film’s magical atmosphere.
Fans can also look forward to hearing how the music complements the film’s emotional moments, from Lilith’s struggle to step out of Cinderella’s shadow to the sisters’ unexpected journey toward understanding one another.
A Star-Studded Voice Cast
Beyond its music, STEPS brings together an impressive ensemble of actors and performers to give its fairy-tale characters a new personality.
The voice cast includes Ali Wong as Lilith, Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella, and Stephanie Hsu as Margot, alongside Nikki Glaser as Priscilla.
They are joined by Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, Bette Midler, and Damian Priest, adding further star power to the animated production.
The film is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing serving as producers. Poehler and Lessing are producing through Paper Kite Productions.
The screenplay is written by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, and Felicia Ho, with the story developed by Tramer, Madejski, Schwartz, Ho, Riki Lindhome, and Kate Micucci.
Together, the creative team brings a fresh perspective to the familiar fairy-tale world, building a story that balances fantasy and comedy with themes of identity, family, and personal growth.
Another Magical Addition to Netflix Animation Lineup
STEPS joins Netflix’s growing collection of original animated films, which includes acclaimed and popular titles such as KPop Demon Hunters, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Nimona, The Sea Beast, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Over the Moon, Klaus, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
The platform’s animation slate also includes Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Leo, and Back to the Outback, alongside upcoming projects such as In Waves and Ray Gunn.
With its distinctive take on Cinderella, recognizable voice cast, and original music featuring JENNIE, STEPS aims to bring something new to the world of animated fairy tales.
Rather than simply retelling a familiar story, the film invites viewers to reconsider the characters they thought they knew — and discover what happens when the supposed villain gets a chance to tell her side of the story.
When Can You Watch STEPS?
Mark your calendars! STEPS will premiere on November 20, exclusively on Netflix. The film’s official soundtrack, featuring JENNIE’s new song “Someone to Hold,” will also be available to stream on the same date.
For fans of animation, fairy-tale adventures, and JENNIE’s music, the upcoming release offers plenty to look forward to.
After all, perhaps the most interesting part of Cinderella’s story has been waiting in the shadows all along.
And this time, it is her stepsister’s turn to take the spotlight.
