JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesian actor Vino G. Bastian has encouraged younger generations to reject the desire for instant success and instead learn from the perseverance, faith, and dedication of Buya Hamka, one of Indonesia’s most respected Muslim scholars, writers, and national heroes.
Vino shared the message while reflecting on the life of the influential figure he portrays in Hamka: Awal Mula (Vol. 3), the final installment of the biographical film trilogy. The film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas across Indonesia on November 19, 2026.
Speaking after a special screening in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 28, Vino emphasized that young people should be willing to work hard and build their futures from the ground up.
“Young people should not develop an instant mindset. They need to be willing to work their way up from the bottom,” Vino said.
Building a Strong Foundation for the Future
According to Vino, navigating today’s increasingly complex world requires more than ambition or the desire to achieve success quickly. Young people must develop a strong personal foundation through education, character, firm principles, and, above all, faith.
“They must have knowledge, they must have character, they must have principles, but most importantly, they must have faith,” he stressed.
For Vino, Buya Hamka’s journey serves as a reminder that meaningful achievements are built through patience, continuous learning, and perseverance. Rather than focusing solely on immediate results, young people should appreciate the process of becoming better versions of themselves.
The film portrays Hamka’s formative years, highlighting his early experiences in seeking knowledge and shaping the values that would later define his life and work.
Through this story, Vino hopes audiences will be inspired to approach their own journeys with greater determination and a deeper appreciation for the importance of personal growth.
Desy Ratnasari Gains Confidence in Speaking Minang
Meanwhile, actress Desy Ratnasari has embraced a different challenge while preparing for her role as Ummi Shafiyah, Buya Hamka’s mother, in the upcoming film.
The actress, who comes from West Java and is known for her Sundanese background, revealed that she has become more confident in speaking the Minang language through an intensive mentoring process during production.
Desy explained that language and character coaching took place throughout the filmmaking process, beginning in pre-production and continuing during filming.
“We continued our mentoring sessions during pre-production, and we kept working with our mentors throughout the filming process,” Desy said after the special screening in the Senayan area of Jakarta.
She added that she consistently worked to improve her Minang dialect and viewed the experience as an opportunity to learn something new.
“For me, filming this movie has been a new and valuable experience,” she said.
Her preparation highlights the attention given to cultural and linguistic details in bringing the characters and their backgrounds to life on screen.
The Final Chapter of Buya Hamka’s Story
Hamka: Awal Mula (Vol. 3) serves as the concluding chapter of the biographical trilogy about Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, widely known as Buya Hamka.
The film explores an earlier period of his life, from his childhood to his marriage to Siti Raham, offering audiences a closer look at the personal experiences and formative moments behind his later achievements.
The production features an ensemble cast spanning several generations of Indonesian performers, including Vino G. Bastian, Mawar De Jongh, Desy Ratnasari, Laudya Cynthia Bella, Donny Damara, Reza Rahadian, Ayu Laksmi, Mathias Muchus, Wafda Saifan, and Rey Bong.
Desy also expressed her enthusiasm for reuniting with producer Chand Parwez Servia of Starvision, who had invited her to work on films since her younger years. The project also gave her the opportunity to share the screen again with fellow actor Donny Damara.
With its combination of historical storytelling, family relationships, cultural identity, and lessons about perseverance, the film aims to introduce audiences to the early life of a figure whose influence extends beyond religious scholarship into Indonesian literature and national history.
As the trilogy reaches its conclusion, Vino’s message remains particularly relevant to younger audiences: lasting success is not simply about reaching a destination quickly, but about developing the knowledge, character, principles, and faith needed to make the journey meaningful.
Hamka: Awal Mula (Vol. 3) is scheduled to open in cinemas throughout Indonesia on November 19, 2026.
