JAKARTA – What happens when three unemployed men run out of options and decide to make a living by pretending to be shamans? That bizarre premise sets the stage for Gak Masuk Akal, the latest horror-comedy from Indonesian production house Leo Pictures, scheduled to hit cinemas across Indonesia in January 2027.
Directed by Deni Saputra, the film is produced by Agung Saputra, with Hadrah Daeng Ratu serving as its creator. The project marks another collaboration between the team following the success of Jangan Buang Ibu, which attracted more than 3.3 million moviegoers.
At the heart of Gak Masuk Akal are three characters: Iman, Suparno, and Togar. Struggling to find jobs amid rising living costs, the trio comes up with an unconventional business idea: opening a shamans’ practice.
What begins as a desperate attempt to make ends meet promises to take audiences into a world where comedy and supernatural elements collide.
A Comedy-Horror Story Inspired by Modern Life
Leo Pictures producer Agung Saputra says the company is committed to exploring fresh storytelling approaches rather than relying solely on genres and formulas that have worked in the past.
“For Leo Pictures, the courage to tell stories has never been limited by genre. We don’t want to stop at formulas that have already proven successful. Instead, we continue to seek new perspectives that resonate with audiences today,” Agung said in a press statement on October 31, 2026.
He added that combining comedy and horror offers an entertaining way to reflect the increasingly absurd realities of modern life.
“We are bringing audiences a horror-comedy that is not simply about entertainment, but also reflects the absurdity of modern life,” he explained.
Creator Hadrah Daeng Ratu believes the film’s premise is closely connected to challenges many people face today, particularly the rising cost of living and the struggle to secure employment.
“When living costs keep rising while so many people are struggling to find jobs, the three main characters—Iman, Suparno, and Togar—start looking for a way out that makes absolutely no sense, because life itself has become increasingly brutal,” Hadrah said.
Through its unusual premise, the film turns familiar economic frustrations into the starting point for a story filled with humor, supernatural twists, and unexpected situations.
Kamal Rasyid Takes on His First Leading Role
The film features Kamal Rasyid as Iman, alongside Sadana Agung as Suparno and Bonar Manalu as Togar.
The cast also includes Luna Maya as Nia and Anya Geraldine as Lilis.
For Kamal Rasyid, the project holds special significance as it marks his first leading role in a film. He expressed his gratitude to Leo Pictures and producer Agung Saputra for giving him the opportunity to bring Iman to life.
Beyond the principal cast, Gak Masuk Akal boasts an ensemble of comedians, digital content creators, singers, and veteran actors.
Among the additional cast members are Sahil Mulachela, Amanda Manopo, Oki Rengga, Asri Welas, Ria Ricis, Jarwo Kwat, Nunung, Mpok Atiek, and Yatie Surachman, along with several other performers.
The diverse lineup adds to the film’s comedic appeal, bringing together familiar faces from different corners of Indonesia’s entertainment industry.
When Desperation Meets the Supernatural
With its mix of everyday struggles, unconventional business schemes, and supernatural elements, Gak Masuk Akal aims to offer a different take on the horror-comedy genre.
Rather than relying solely on scares, the film uses an absurd premise to explore the lengths people might go to when ordinary ways of making a living no longer seem possible.
Produced by Leo Pictures, Gak Masuk Akal is scheduled to arrive in Indonesian cinemas in January 2027.
Sometimes, when life gets tough, people do whatever it takes to survive. But in this film, their solution might just be the most unbelievable one of all.
