K-Drama Fans Across Southeast Asia Gather: Visit by the Cast and Creators of Can This Love Be Translated? in Jakarta Leaves a Lasting Impression

Netflix held a press conference for its latest Korean drama series, Can This Love Be Translated?, in Jakarta on January 16, 2026. The event was attended by the two lead actors, Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung, along with director Yoo Young-eun. Filmed across various locations such as Korea, Japan, Canada, and Italy, this romantic comedy follows the unexpected love story between multilingual interpreter Joo Ho-jin and a global celebrity named Cha Mu-hee.

Written by the legendary Hong Sisters (Alchemy of Souls, Hotel Del Luna), Can This Love Be Translated? presents captivating chemistry, engaging dialogue, and emotional depth in its exploration of whether the language of love can truly be translated.

Director Yoo Young-eun shared her approach to portraying the language of love on screen, especially when its “meaning” is sometimes misunderstood or mistranslated by the characters in the series.“The two characters speak in very ‘different’ ways, which is why there are moments of misunderstanding between them. For Ho-jin, I focused on his solitary nature and tried to capture moments when he is alone. As for Mu-hee, she may seem very talkative, but among all the words she speaks, there are actually only two or three sentences that carry serious meaning,” she explained.

The diverse filming locations also contribute greatly to the beauty of the series, making Can This Love Be Translated? visually stunning, with each location becoming an integral part of the story.“We visited many beautiful places as our backgrounds—stunning and extraordinary locations. In Japan, I tried to create a warm feeling; in Canada, I wanted to showcase the aurora borealis to add a dramatic touch. And because this is a romantic comedy, I wanted to portray the emotions of both characters,” she said.

Speaking about how she feels after global audiences have watched the series, the director added:“Perhaps everyone can relate to the emotions shown here. I hope that in this world, we can all speak different languages yet still love one another. With different languages, there may be disappointment or differing feelings, but if we stand in the name of love, compromise, and understand each other, we can overcome anything.”

To portray the character of Joo Ho-jin, actor Kim Seon-ho shared his approach to depicting someone who works as a translator yet struggles to translate his own emotions.

“I play Ho-jin, whose character is very different from Cha Mu-hee. Mu-hee is much more expressive than Ho-jin, so I focused on how I react. I discussed with the director how to show Ho-jin’s character through things like his gaze, manner of speaking, and movements,” he said.

The actor also talked about his preparation in learning the various languages and accents mastered by Ho-jin, such as English, Italian, and Japanese.“I prepared for this role for four months, and there was a separate language coach for each language. Without that preparation, I think I would have given up on scenes like the one at Momo-chan [ramen shop]. But I had many discussions with the language teachers, and in the end, I managed,” he recalled.

Portraying a global celebrity who is emotionally closed off, actress Go Youn-jung spoke about the appeal of her character and her approach to showing Cha Mu-hee’s vulnerable side.

“My preparation for Mu-hee’s character was about showing that she became a superstar not step by step, but all at once. So there’s happiness, but on the other hand, there’s also fear. That’s what I wanted to express through this character. Mu-hee doesn’t openly show her feelings, so in the sentences she speaks, there are many words, and her lines often go in circles to protect herself from getting hurt,” she explained.

Both Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung expressed their gratitude and admiration after witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm of K-drama fans in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.“I am deeply thankful for the love and support that are always there. I will return with renewed passion thanks to your enthusiasm and encouragement. Thanks to Netflix and Can This Love Be Translated?, I was able to come to Jakarta and return home with immense happiness and positive energy. I love you all,” Kim Seon-ho said.

Go Youn-jung, who experienced meeting international fans face-to-face for the first time, shared:“When I was in the experience zone earlier, I heard such an incredible welcome. I felt deeply touched and grateful.”

She also added:“This series is filled with beautiful, breathtaking scenes, much like the landscapes of Indonesia. If you continue watching until episode 12, you will be treated to stunning visuals and Ho-jin’s beautiful voice. We hope you enjoy the series, and thank you for your love and support.”

This event was a rare opportunity for fans to celebrate the series’ launch on its premiere day, supported by interactive elements and immersive experiences reflecting the narrative of the series and the countries visited by the characters.

Since its announcement, the fan event attracted enthusiasm from more than 30,000 fans who submitted videos or registered for a chance to meet their idols. Meanwhile, the Can This Love Be Translated? Experience Zone runs until January 18, 2026, at the Atrium of Kota Kasablanka, Jakarta, and is open to the public free of charge.

Director Yoo Young-eun shared:“It is a great honor to meet audiences around the world through this series. My heart feels incredibly happy. I visited the experience zone and made a bookmark with a four-leaf clover. I am truly delighted and grateful that fans can experience being Ho-jin and Mu-hee and enjoy the series as if we are traveling together.”
