Batak Musical Film PULANG KAMPUNG Unveils Official Trailer, Introducing Daniel and Uli Journey Home

The Bene Dion Rajagukguk-directed musical will hit Indonesian cinemas on November 26, 2026

Jakarta, October 7, 2026 — A journey home becomes an unexpected journey of love, culture, and music in PULANG KAMPUNG, the upcoming Batak musical from production house Imajinari. The film has officially released its trailer today, offering audiences their first extended look at the colorful world of Daniel and Uli—and introducing several of the Batak songs that will bring their story to life.

Written and directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, PULANG KAMPUNG follows Daniel (Axelo Nababan), a young Batak man born and raised in Jakarta who is forced to return to his ancestral hometown at his father’s request. The film is set to premiere in Indonesian cinemas on November 26, 2026.

Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Toba, the story sees Daniel accompanied by his cousin Uli (Vanessa Simorangkir), who lives in the area. Under his father’s instructions, Daniel must learn more about his Batak roots and culture as he prepares for a future as a legislative candidate.

But what begins as a cultural homecoming soon takes an unexpected turn.

As Daniel discovers more about his heritage, he also finds himself growing closer to Uli. Their playful and endearing relationship gradually develops into something more complicated when Daniel realizes that he may be falling in love—not only with Batak culture, but with Uli herself.

The newly released trailer takes viewers through harbors, village roads, and the sweeping scenery surrounding Lake Toba before bursting into lively musical sequences filled with singing, dancing, and a large ensemble of performers. The upbeat Batak songs give the film a distinctive energy while underscoring the warmth and humor at the heart of Daniel and Uli’s journey.“The story of PULANG KAMPUNG started with the songs. From there, I began writing Daniel and Uli’s journey around them,” said writer-director Bene Dion Rajagukguk. “I hope audiences can enjoy the music while also following their story, including those who may not be familiar with Batak songs.”

Bringing Batak Music to the Big Screen

Music is at the heart of PULANG KAMPUNG. Musical director Viky Sianipar has reimagined a selection of Batak songs with arrangements designed to complement the film’s performers, choreography, and vibrant visual style.

The trailer also introduces snippets of four songs featured in the film: “Jamila,” “Pulo Samosir,” “Tortohon Ma,” and “Tirismo Lae Bangkuang.” Three of the songs—“Jamila,” “Tortohon Ma,” and “Tirismo Lae Bangkuang”—are also being released today through Imajinari’s official Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok accounts, @imajinari.id.

For Bene, the music was not simply an element added to the story—it was where the story began.

The production itself involved approximately six months of preparation, including script readings, vocal training, choreography rehearsals, and song recording. Filming took place across the Lake Toba region and Samosir Island in North Sumatra, as well as in Jakarta.

The expansive outdoor locations featured in the trailer offer a glimpse of the film’s scale while establishing the world in which Daniel and Uli’s relationship unfolds.

A Musical Journey Six Months in the Making

Creating a musical required a different kind of preparation from the beginning, according to producer Ernest Prakasa.“From the moment Bene shared his idea, we knew this musical would require a different kind of preparation,” said Ernest. “The songs, acting, and choreography all had to work together to create the same energy and experience for the audience. We want PULANG KAMPUNG to be a warm and enjoyable cinematic experience for as many people as possible.”

The production also brought together choreographer Dimas Praditya and Associate Producer Bayu Pontiagust, both of whom have experience working in the musical format.

At the center of the film are Axelo Nababan and Vanessa Simorangkir, whose chemistry as Daniel and Uli takes the spotlight in both dramatic and musical moments. Both actors are alumni of Indonesian Idol Season 13, with PULANG KAMPUNG marking Axelo’s big-screen acting debut and Vanessa’s acting debut.

For Axelo, the film presented a new challenge: performing not just as an actor, but as a character who must also sing and dance.“Music has always been close to me, but in this film I had to sing as Daniel,” Axelo said. “We spent a lot of time practicing vocals, choreography, and scenes together with Vanessa so that Daniel and Uli’s relationship would feel alive. I hope audiences can feel the excitement of their journey through this trailer.”

A Homecoming Filled with Music, Culture, and Heart

Produced by Ernest Prakasa and Dipa Andika, PULANG KAMPUNG is directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, with Kristo Immanuel serving as co-director. The film also features Judika Sihotang, Lea Simanjuntak, Rita Matu Mona, and Paulus Simangunsong.

Blending Batak music and culture with comedy, romance, choreography, and the spectacular scenery of North Sumatra, PULANG KAMPUNG promises a fresh musical experience for Indonesian audiences.

Daniel may have been sent home to learn about his roots. But as the trailer suggests, his journey could lead him to discover much more than he expected.

PULANG KAMPUNG arrives in Indonesian cinemas on November 26, 2026.
