From Jakarta and Depok to Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang, and Medan, acclaimed films from around the world are coming closer to Indonesian moviegoers.
Indonesian film lovers are getting more opportunities to experience acclaimed world cinema on the big screen as Cinépolis Cinemas Indonesia and KlikFilm join forces to introduce two major programs: Malang World Cinema (MWC) and Cinépolis Sala de Arte x KlikFilm Showcase.
The announcement was made during a talk show at Cinépolis Senayan Park in Jakarta on October 8, followed by a special screening of NAZA, the film by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor that received the Special Jury Prize at the 2026 Venice Film Festival.
Together, the two programs aim to bring a carefully curated selection of films from major international festivals to audiences across Indonesia. The lineup includes award-winning titles, independent productions, works by acclaimed filmmakers, classics, and documentaries.
Malang World Cinema Brings Global Film Culture to East Java
For the first time, Jakarta World Cinema (JWC) is expanding to Malang through Malang World Cinema, which will take place from November 14 to 21, 2026, at Cinépolis Malang Town Square.
The event follows JWC 2026, which featured 207 films from 69 countries, including 120 award-winning films from some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The selection also included 20 official submissions from different countries for the 2027 Academy Awards.
For KlikFilm, bringing the festival experience outside Jakarta is part of a broader effort to make quality cinema more accessible to audiences across Indonesia.“This collaboration is a concrete step for KlikFilm to continue bringing quality cinema closer to Indonesian audiences in a more equal way,” said Frederica, Director of KlikFilm and Executive Director of Malang World Cinema. “Through Malang World Cinema and Sala de Arte, we are not only bringing the best-curated films from international festivals to the big screen, but also looking to build a consistent and sustainable film appreciation ecosystem outside Jakarta.”
Malang was a natural destination for the expansion, given the city’s reputation as one of East Java’s most vibrant creative communities.
Festival Director Shandy Gasella said Malang World Cinema is designed to give local audiences a more complete festival experience while introducing them to a broader range of perspectives from around the world.“Malang World Cinema is here to provide audiences in Malang with a complete cinematic experience through the diversity of world cinema perspectives,” Gasella said. “We are bringing hundreds of selected works, from winners of prestigious festivals to Oscar representatives, so film lovers outside the major centers can experience the pulse and dynamics of global film culture directly in cinemas.”
A Lineup Packed With Festival Favorites
Among the highlights of Malang World Cinema is Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, one of the festival’s highly anticipated titles and a recent Palme d’Or winner at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
The festival will also feature the Southeast Asian premiere of Inherit, the latest horror film from Thai genre maestro Banjong Pisanthanakun, best known for The Medium and Shutter. The film stars Thai actress Davika Hoorne.
Other highlights include:
- Minotaur by Andrey Zvyagintsev, winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes 2026
- All of a Sudden by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, featuring the Best Actress winner from Cannes 2026
- The Debut, the latest directorial effort from Jesse Eisenberg
- NAZA by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, winner of the Special Jury Prize at Venice 2026
- Woman Unknown by May el-Toukhy, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice 2026
- Yellow Letters by İlker Çatak, winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival
While Yellow Letters will be available online through KlikFilm, the wider Malang World Cinema lineup is designed to recreate the excitement of a major international film festival for audiences in East Java.
The complete film lineup and ticketing information will be announced in the coming weeks through @cinepolisid, @malangworldcinema, @klikfilm, and cinepolis.co.id.
Sala de Arte: Making World Cinema a Regular Big-Screen Experience
While Malang World Cinema brings the festival experience to a new city, Cinépolis and KlikFilm are also looking to create a more permanent home for international and alternative cinema through Cinépolis Sala de Arte x KlikFilm Showcase.
The Sala de Arte concept originated in Mexico in June 2012, providing dedicated space for alternative films, classics, festival selections, and documentaries. It has since become a permanent feature at more than 25 Cinépolis screens in Mexico and has expanded to other countries, including Chile, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.
In Indonesia, the concept will be introduced in partnership with KlikFilm, which will serve as the program’s curator and partner.
According to Alejandro Aguilera Garibay, CEO of Cinépolis Cinemas Indonesia, the initiative reflects the company’s belief that audiences should have access to quality international cinema regardless of where they live.“We believe Indonesian audiences deserve to experience world cinema to the same high standard wherever they are,” Garibay said. “Malang World Cinema opens the door through a festival, and we want that door to remain open in the long term. That is the spirit of Sala de Arte, which we have been running in Mexico since 2012 and are now bringing to Indonesia, so that selected films from around the world always have a place on cinema screens.”
Sala de Arte Opens With a Special Marathon Screening
The Sala de Arte program will officially kick off with a Marathon Screening on October 15, 2026, one day before its regular theatrical schedule begins.
Three films will be screened back-to-back:
- Sheep in the Box
- Aftersun
- NAZA
The special marathon screening is priced at Rp60,000, with tickets going on sale on October 9, 2026, through cinepolis.co.id.
Sheep in the Box
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the filmmaker behind the Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters, Sheep in the Box premiered in the main competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
Set in the near future, the film follows a married couple grieving the loss of their son. Their lives take an unexpected turn when a humanoid arrives with exactly the same face and voice as their child.
Starring Haruka Ayase, Daigo, and Rimu Kuwaki, the film explores grief, family, and the complicated ways people cope with loss.
Aftersun
Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun stars Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio in a quietly moving story about a father and daughter on holiday at a resort in Turkey during the 1990s.
The acclaimed film combines intimate family drama with a deeply personal exploration of memory and the passage of time.
NAZA
The third title in the marathon is NAZA, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, which received the Special Jury Prize at the 2026 Venice Film Festival.
The film was also given a special press screening during the October 8 announcement event at Cinépolis Senayan Park ahead of its inclusion in the Sala de Arte Marathon Screening.
Six Cities, One Shared Love of Cinema
The Sala de Arte Marathon Screening will take place simultaneously across six Indonesian cities:
- Jakarta — Cinépolis Senayan Park
- Yogyakarta — Cinépolis Lippo Plaza Jogja
- Depok — Cinépolis Depok Town Square
- Malang — Cinépolis Malang Town Square
- Semarang — Cinépolis Java Supermal
- Medan — Cinépolis Lippo Plaza Medan
Starting October 16, 2026, Sala de Arte will continue with regular screenings at the same six locations.
The expansion represents a significant opportunity for Indonesian audiences outside Jakarta to discover films that might otherwise be difficult to find on the commercial cinema circuit.
Rather than limiting international festival cinema to occasional events, Cinépolis and KlikFilm are positioning Sala de Arte as a continuing platform where independent films, festival favorites, classics, and documentaries can find a home on the big screen.
Bringing World Cinema Across the Archipelago
For Cinépolis and KlikFilm, the two initiatives are ultimately about more than expanding a film lineup. They represent an effort to build a wider and more sustainable culture of cinema appreciation in Indonesia.
With Malang World Cinema offering the energy of a festival and Sala de Arte x KlikFilm Showcase providing a more permanent theatrical platform, audiences in multiple cities will have greater access to films from different cultures, filmmakers, and cinematic traditions.
For moviegoers looking beyond mainstream releases, the message is simple: some of the world’s most talked-about films are coming closer to home.
