What begins as a desperate attempt to reconnect with a lost lover turns into a terrifying descent into the supernatural in Dimas Anggara’s directorial debut.
JAKARTA — NIH Pictures is bringing a new Indonesian horror film to cinemas with Aplikasi Iblis, a supernatural thriller directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Dimas Anggara.
Set to hit Indonesian theaters on October 15, 2026, the film takes a chillingly modern approach to horror by exploring what happens when technology becomes a gateway to the spirit world—and when grief and obsession push someone far beyond the limits of what should be possible.
Rather than relying solely on traditional scares, Aplikasi Iblis combines psychological horror, supernatural terror, and action-thriller elements, creating a story where emotional obsession becomes the source of an increasingly deadly nightmare.
When Love Opens the Door to the Other Side
At first, Aplikasi Iblis appears to be heading toward a romantic story.
Arya, played by Junior Roberts, is preparing to propose to his girlfriend, Laras, portrayed by Dosma Hazenbosch. But their plans are shattered when tragedy strikes and Laras dies.
Unable to accept her death, Arya becomes consumed by grief and desperately searches for a way to reunite with the woman he loves.
His answer comes in the form of a mysterious application that claims to connect the living with the dead.
What initially appears to be a miraculous second chance quickly becomes something far more sinister.
The application opens a doorway to the spirit world, unleashing a terrifying chain of events that Arya can no longer control.
Horror Driven by Obsession
For Dimas Anggara, the film is not simply about ghosts or supernatural encounters. At the heart of Aplikasi Iblis is a warning about what can happen when love turns into an unhealthy obsession.“The film wants to show that too much of anything is not good and will eventually have negative consequences,” Dimas Anggara said.
Arya’s inability to let go of his deceased lover becomes the driving force behind the horror. Instead of allowing himself to grieve and move forward, he becomes increasingly dependent on the mysterious application—and ultimately chooses a path that brings unimaginable consequences.
This emotional foundation gives the supernatural elements a more psychological edge, turning the application into more than just a technological device. It becomes a gateway through which Arya’s grief, obsession, and desperation come back to haunt him.
More Than Just Jumpscares
While Aplikasi Iblis delivers plenty of supernatural terror, the filmmakers have also incorporated action into the story.
The result is a hybrid of psychological horror and action thriller, with the characters forced to confront both supernatural threats and physical danger.
The film’s production also presented its own challenges. Much of the story was filmed inside an abandoned former supermarket, a location that the production team used to enhance the film’s eerie atmosphere while providing an expansive setting for its action sequences.
Producer R. Dimas Aryanto explained that transforming the abandoned building into one of the film’s key locations helped strengthen both the horror and action-thriller elements.“One of the challenges was shooting inside an abandoned former supermarket,” Aryanto said. “We used the location to support the horror atmosphere as well as the action-thriller elements of the film.”
Junior Roberts Takes on a More Physically Demanding Role
For Junior Roberts, playing Arya meant more than portraying a man struggling with grief.
The actor also had to take on a demanding series of physical action sequences, including fights against professional athletes who appear in the film.“Physically, I really had to push myself because Aplikasi Iblis is not only a horror film but also features a lot of action,” Roberts said. “So it wasn’t just about running around. I actually had to fight professional athletes who are also part of the film.”
Beyond the physical demands, Roberts said the character also gave him a different perspective on grief and letting go.“Through Arya, I learned that we have to learn to let go of those who have passed away and are no longer with us,” he said.
Arya, however, is unable to do so. His grief gradually becomes an obsession, clouding his judgment and leaving him vulnerable to forces he never expected to encounter.
Dosma Hazenbosch Embraces the Supernatural
For Dosma Hazenbosch, Aplikasi Iblis marks her first appearance in a horror film—and the role required more than a transformation through makeup.
Playing Laras as a spirit returning to the world of the living, Hazenbosch also had to develop a completely different vocal quality for the character.“Because I play a ghost or spirit returning to the world, it wasn’t only my physical appearance and face that had to change,” Hazenbosch said. “I also changed my voice to make it deeper, which required quite a lot of training and research to create something different.”
The combination of makeup, physical performance, and vocal transformation is expected to give Laras an unsettling presence as the story moves deeper into supernatural territory.
A New Chapter for Dimas Anggara
With Aplikasi Iblis, Dimas Anggara steps behind the camera to make his horror directorial debut, bringing together a story that mixes contemporary technology with supernatural folklore and emotionally charged character drama.
The film is directed by Dimas Anggara, produced by R. Dimas Aryanto, and written by Tisa TS.
The cast includes Junior Roberts, Dosma Hazenbosch, Aulia Deas, Aldo Irawan Putra, Muhammad Daffa Al Harits, and Valdes Herera, with a special appearance by Della Dartyan.
Rather than presenting technology as something inherently frightening, Aplikasi Iblis uses it as the trigger for a much more human fear: the inability to let go.
As Arya’s desire to bring his lost love back grows stronger, the line between grief and obsession begins to disappear—and the consequences become increasingly terrifying.
