The latest Korean romantic film, Hear Me: Our Summer, will greet Indonesian audiences in cinemas starting January 8! This information was directly announced by CBI Pictures via their Instagram account.
After its successful release in Korea in November 2024, the film’s arrival in Indonesia has been highly anticipated, especially because of its warm and touching first-love theme.
The story follows Yong Jun (Hong Kyung), a young man who works as a delivery driver for his family’s store. Yong Jun doesn’t have a clear purpose in life until one day he meets Yeo Reum (Roh Yoon Seo), a girl who lives with her younger sister, Ga Eul (Kim Min Ju). Their first meeting at a swimming pool immediately sparks Yong Jun’s interest in Yeo Reum, though he later learns that Yeo Reum is deaf.
Undeterred, Yong Jun begins communicating with Yeo Reum using sign language that he had learned before. Yeo Reum is depicted as a hardworking person who sacrifices a lot to support her sister Ga Eul, who dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer despite her hearing impairment.
Yeo Reum’s daily life is filled with responsibilities, from working part-time to being a swimming coach for Ga Eul. Recognizing Yeo Reum’s packed schedule, Yong Jun shows small yet meaningful gestures of care, such as bringing her lunch. Yong Jun’s sincerity gradually melts Yeo Reum’s heart, and they begin a sweet romantic relationship, like any young couple enjoying their time together and learning to understand each other’s worlds.
The film offers a unique watching experience because much of the story is conveyed through sign language, facial expressions, and body movements, rather than verbal dialogue like most films. This adds a deep emotional touch, inviting the audience to truly understand the characters’ feelings through their gazes and gestures. The background music and natural sounds, such as water and wind, also play an important role in enriching the atmosphere.
Hear Me: Our Summer is an adaptation of the Taiwanese film Hear Me (2009), but the Korean version offers a fresher and more relevant approach. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, director Jo Sun-ho added new elements to strengthen the character development, such as the relationship between Yeo Reum and Ga Eul, which portrays a loving family dynamic.
The actors also prepared seriously for their roles, including Roh Yoon Seo, who learned sign language and worked on improving her expressive abilities.
This film not only tells a story of sincere first love but also a journey of discovering dreams and building meaningful human connections. With beautiful cinematography and strong emotions, Hear Me: Our Summer offers a different viewing experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Don’t miss this film in theaters starting January 8, and feel the warmth of this simple yet meaningful love story.
