After shaking the South Korean film industry on December 4, 2024, Firefighters will soon be released in Indonesia on February 7.
Firefighters is a film that showcases the struggles of firefighters trying to save lives from the flames.
According to The Korean Times, director Kwak Kyung-taek didn’t rely much on cinematic techniques, as Firefighters is based on a tragedy that occurred in 2001.
In the trailer uploaded by Eontalk, the tension during the firefighting and victim rescue process is clearly depicted. The film provides a point of view from the firefighters, who, though terrified, are determined to carry out their duties.
A line of dialogue, “If I fail here, that person will die,” deepens the emotional intensity the film will bring to the big screen.
Firefighters also tells the story of Cheol Woong, a new firefighter crew member, who is consumed by guilt after losing a colleague in a fire.
In the story, Joo Won successfully portrays Cheol Woong, a character who is anxious but also passionate about becoming a firefighter.
The film will also star Yoo Jae Myung, who plays the team leader, and Lee Yoo Young as a paramedic.
Tension, sadness, struggle, and despair will be clearly portrayed in each character, even the supporting roles, to bring back the tragedy of 24 years ago.
In March 2001, Seoul’s firefighters received an emergency call from an apartment building in the Hongjae-don area, northwest of Seoul. The fire, caused by the owner’s child, resulted in the loss of six firefighters’ lives in a single incident. This tragic sacrifice drew attention to the poor working conditions of firefighters.
Gradually, the South Korean government began to address these shortcomings, implementing three-shift work schedules and improving necessary equipment.
In addition to honoring the firefighters, the film also shows the harsh realities of facing fire. Director Kwak Kyung-taek successfully conveys the tension and the difficulty of reaching the scene due to the chaotic parking conditions in Korea.
The actors also executed each character very realistically, from the emotions they experienced to the challenge of finding victims amidst the thick smoke.
After premiering in Korea on December 4, 2024, the Korean film Firefighters will be ready to hit theaters in Indonesia on February 7.
