Netflix The East Palace Unveils a Stellar Cast, Supernatural Mystery, and a Stunning New World of Korean Fantasy
Netflix’s upcoming Korean series The East Palace is ready to take viewers into a haunting world where royal secrets, supernatural forces, and the realm of spirits collide. Led by Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo, the highly anticipated series promises a unique blend of historical drama, fantasy, action, and Korean occult storytelling.
Set in a mysterious kingdom threatened by a powerful curse, The East Palace follows a man who can walk between the human world and the spirit realm, a palace maid who can hear the voices of spirits, and a king desperate to uncover the truth hidden inside the royal palace.
Nam Joo-hyuk Returns as a Spirit Hunter with Explosive Action
After completing his military service, Nam Joo-hyuk makes his highly anticipated return as Gu-cheon, a man gifted with the ability to enter the Realm of Gwi and defeat supernatural beings.
Having impressed audiences through diverse roles in Start-Up, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and Vigilante, Nam Joo-hyuk takes on one of his most challenging characters yet. Gu-cheon is not only a powerful spirit hunter but also a deeply wounded individual carrying the trauma of losing his mother at a young age.
The actor focused on creating a believable connection with invisible supernatural beings, imagining how spirits and the mysterious Realm of Gwi would exist beyond the human world.“I was constantly trying to imagine the invisible spirits and the Realm of Gwi, thinking about how to translate this world vividly on screen,” Nam Joo-hyuk shared.
For the action-heavy role, he underwent extensive training, especially for sword fighting sequences.“Since Gu-cheon is someone who acts before he speaks, I felt that I had to nail the action sequences for the character to feel convincing,” he explained.
His dedication is expected to bring intense and visually spectacular combat scenes to the series.
Roh Yoon-seo Transforms into a Palace Maid Connected to the Spirit World
Rising star Roh Yoon-seo takes on the role of Saeng-gang, a palace maid with the extraordinary ability to hear spirits.
Known for her performances in Our Blues, 20th Century Girl, and Crash Course in Romance, Roh Yoon-seo steps into unfamiliar territory with her first historical fantasy drama.
Saeng-gang once viewed her ability as a curse, but it eventually becomes the key to uncovering the secrets behind the palace’s mysterious haunting. Alongside Gu-cheon, she forms an unlikely partnership as they investigate the supernatural incidents threatening the royal family.
Roh Yoon-seo admitted that adapting to the historical genre was challenging, particularly learning the proper speech patterns and posture required for the role.“Maintaining proper vocal projection and posture was tough. My body stiffened at first because I wasn’t used to it, but it became more natural over time.”
Despite the difficulties, she found the experience rewarding and was excited by Saeng-gang’s emotional journey.
Cho Seung-woo Brings Depth and Authority as the King
Veteran actor Cho Seung-woo plays the King, a ruler who secretly summons Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang to solve the curse threatening the royal bloodline.
Although he initially dismisses spirits and curses as superstition, the death of his princes and the danger facing his final heir force him to confront a mysterious reality.
Cho Seung-woo was drawn to the complexity of the character and the opportunity to portray the hidden struggles of a powerful but isolated ruler.“Leaving aside the social status of a king, I think being a leader is always lonely and isolating,” he said.
The actor also praised his younger co-stars, highlighting Nam Joo-hyuk’s passion and Roh Yoon-seo’s dedication to her craft.“Joo-hyuk struck me as an actor with incredible passion for acting and determination,” Cho shared, while praising Roh’s commitment and charisma on set.
A Unique Universe Where Two Worlds Collide
One of the biggest attractions of The East Palace is its original fantasy universe, where the human world and the Realm of Gwi exist side by side.
The Realm of Gwi is portrayed as a dark, desolate world filled with supernatural beings, including won-gwi, spirits born from deep resentment, and gwi-mae, physical manifestations of negative energy.
Unlike traditional ghost stories, the series explores how these two different worlds are connected and how the struggles of each character exist within the same reality.
Director Choi Jung-kyu emphasized the importance of creating a strong visual contrast between the two realms.“To create a clear contrast between the two worlds, we differentiated the colors and backgrounds,” he explained.
The production team built separate sets for the real world and the Realm of Gwi, adjusting everything from architecture and textures to lighting and atmosphere to create two visually distinct environments.
A Creative Team Behind a Fresh Korean Occult Experience
The East Palace brings together creators with strong experience in supernatural and genre storytelling.
The series is directed by Choi Jung-kyu, known for The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody, while the script comes from Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, writers behind supernatural dramas such as Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest.
Together, they aim to create a world that feels uniquely Korean while still appealing to global audiences through universal themes of fear, destiny, family, and hidden truths.
A Story of Curses, Secrets, and Unbreakable Bonds
The story begins when princes are mysteriously killed one by one, spreading rumors that a cursed spirit is attempting to destroy the royal bloodline.
When Prince Yeongan, the King’s last remaining heir, falls into danger, the King secretly calls upon Gu-cheon to eliminate the spirit responsible. Meanwhile, Saeng-gang is ordered to watch over him while hiding her own secrets.
As the two investigate the curse haunting the East Palace, they uncover a deeper mystery buried beneath the palace grounds.
The series explores not only supernatural battles but also the emotional journeys of Gu-cheon, Saeng-gang, the King, and the royal family as their hidden desires and fears come to the surface.
A Visually Stunning Fantasy Drama Arriving Soon
With breathtaking production design, supernatural action, and a powerful ensemble cast, The East Palace aims to deliver a new kind of Korean fantasy experience.
From Nam Joo-hyuk’s sword battles and Roh Yoon-seo emotional transformation to Cho Seung-woo’s commanding royal presence, the series offers a combination of mystery, horror, and character-driven drama.
As director Choi Jung-kyu hopes, the series is designed to be an unforgettable escape for viewers around the world—a chilling yet captivating journey into a kingdom where spirits, secrets, and destiny collide.
