Jakarta, May 19, 2025 — Following the success of Siege at Bukit Duri, the highest-grossing Indonesian adult action thriller of all time, production house Come and See Pictures—founded by Joko Anwar and Tia Hasibuan—has announced the cast of its upcoming feature film Dark Legend of Malin Kundang. The film will be directed by Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat, with Joko Anwar and Tia Hasibuan serving as producers.

The cast includes Rio Dewanto, Faradina Mufti, Vonny Anggraini, Nova Eliza, Jordan Omar, Gambit Saifullah, and Sulthan Hamonangan. Inspired by the Minangkabau folk legend and set in the present day, Dark Legend of Malin Kundang is a drama-mystery-thriller that follows the story of Alif (Rio Dewanto), a micro-painting artist. After recovering from an accident, Alif is warned by doctors that his memory hasn’t fully returned. When he is picked up from the hospital by his wife Nadine (Faradina Mufti) and son Emir (Jordan Omar), he is told that his mother will be visiting for the first time. The problem is—Alif doesn’t remember her face or any part of his past. When the woman arrives, he begins to suspect she might not be his real mother.

Dark Legend of Malin Kundang is the feature directorial debut of Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat. Kevin has previously directed and produced short films that have traveled the international film festival circuit, including Followers (2024), Parasomnia (2024), In the Name of Love I Will Punish You (2024), Accidentally Intentional (2023), and Necessity of Life (2021). Rafki, in addition to writing and directing short films, also wrote the screenplay for the feature film Kafir (2018), and two episodes of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams (2024) for Netflix. Kevin and Rafki previously collaborated on the short film Parasomnia, where Kevin produced and Rafki wrote and directed.

The screenplay for Dark Legend of Malin Kundang was written by Joko Anwar, Aline Djayasukmana (Tira series, Disney+, 2024), and Rafki Hidayat.

The film is produced by Come and See Pictures in collaboration with Rapi Films and Legacy Pictures. It will also be featured at one of the world’s biggest film markets, the Marché du Film at the 2025 Cannes International Film Festival, represented by Barunson E&A as its world sales agent. For its international release, the film is titled Smothered. It is projected to hit theaters in Indonesia later this year.
