Two martial arts stars, one hijacked airplane, and nowhere to run. Wings of Dread is set to bring an explosive showdown between Indonesian action star Iko Uwais and Chinese martial arts actor Ashton Chen in a Mandarin-language action thriller packed with tension and close-quarters combat.

Directed by Pengfei and Ashton Chen, the film promises an intense viewing experience by placing its characters in one of the most challenging environments imaginable: the cabin of a commercial airplane in mid-flight. With limited space and danger surrounding them, every fight becomes a test of skill, speed, and survival.

At the heart of the story is Paquet, played by Iko Uwais, who leads a group of armed hijackers terrorizing a commercial flight. Standing in their way is Gu Chaoyang, portrayed by Ashton Chen, an air marshal who finds himself unexpectedly caught in the crisis.

Gu Chaoyang is not actually on duty when the hijacking takes place. He is simply a passenger returning home from his honeymoon. But when armed criminals seize control of the aircraft, he feels compelled to step in and protect the passengers, turning an ordinary journey into a dangerous battle for survival.

The film’s central confrontation is particularly exciting because of the different martial arts backgrounds of its two leads. Iko Uwais is internationally recognized for his mastery of pencak silat, especially its fast and powerful close-quarters fighting techniques. Ashton Chen, meanwhile, brings his experience in kung fu to the screen.

Rather than heavily dictating how the fight scenes should be performed, Pengfei reportedly gave both actors considerable freedom to use their own martial arts expertise. The director emphasized that the two leads already understand how to execute action sequences effectively because of their extensive backgrounds in martial arts.

Ashton Chen also acknowledged Iko’s strength in pencak silat and encouraged him to make full use of it in the film. This creative freedom could make their confrontation feel more authentic, allowing each actor’s individual fighting style to shine.

The confined setting adds another layer of suspense. Fighting inside an airplane cabin means there is virtually no room for elaborate movements or easy escapes. Every seat, aisle, and narrow passage can become part of the battlefield, creating an atmosphere where the tension can escalate with every move.

For Iko Uwais, Wings of Dread also represents an exciting new chapter, marking his first project with iQIYI, one of Asia’s leading streaming platforms. His involvement further highlights the growing connection between Indonesian action talent and the wider Asian entertainment industry.
