Final Trailer for “Pengepungan di Bukit Duri” Reveals a Troubling Picture of Indonesia’s Future

Jakarta, April 7, 2025 — Ten days ahead of its premiere in cinemas, the film “Pengepungan di Bukit Duri” from writer and director Joko Anwar and producer Tia Hasibuan has released its final trailer, which portrays a troubling situation in Indonesia. The trailer begins with scenes that initially seem peaceful: school children chatting, citizens celebrating. However, all of this proves to be superficial. The sound of the school bell becomes an alarm, signaling that things are about to change. “But wounds won’t disappear just by being forgotten.”

The final trailer for “Pengepungan di Bukit Duri” shows a shift in tone. The cheerful music fades, and the laughter disappears. Chaos erupts, and violence spreads everywhere, leaving nothing but anxiety.

“Our country is like glass, the thinnest kind,” says Morgan Oey, who plays Edwin, in the final trailer of the film.

This film is set to hit cinemas across Indonesia on April 17, 2025, and is one of the most anticipated Indonesian films of the year.

“Pengepungan di Bukit Duri” marks the first collaboration between the Indonesian production house Come and See Pictures and the legendary Amazon MGM Studios in Southeast Asia. With world-class cinematography and production design, the film brings to life a fictional version of Indonesia’s future — chaotic, full of fear, yet still radiating hope.

The film stars Morgan Oey, Omara Esteghlal, Hana Pitrashata Malasan, Endy Arfian, Fatih Unru, Satine Zaneta, Dewa Dayana, Florian Rutters, Faris Fadjar Munggaran, Sandy Pradana, Raihan Khan, Farandika, Millo Taslim, Sheila Kusnadi, Shindy Huang, Kiki Narendra, Lia Lukman, Emir Mahira, Bima Azriel, Natalius Chendana, and Landung Simatupang.

“Pengepungan di Bukit Duri” follows the story of Edwin (Morgan Oey), who, before his brother’s death, promised to find his missing nephew. Edwin’s search leads him to become a teacher at SMA Duri, a school for troubled kids. There, Edwin has to face the most unruly students while searching for his nephew. When he finally finds his brother’s child, chaos breaks out across the city, and they get trapped in the school, fighting for their lives against the brutal kids who now hunt them.

This film also marks two decades of Joko Anwar’s career as a director, known for his boldness in tackling uncomfortable yet crucial narratives.
