Indonesian actress Tissa Biani has revealed her first look from Merah Sebelum Fajar, an upcoming feature film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Garin Nugroho.

Known for her roles in 3 Nafas Likas, KKN di Desa Penari, and the hit comedy Agak Laen, Tissa shared a glimpse of her latest project through social media, sparking curiosity among fans about the historical drama.

“Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.. first look! my new movie project! Merah Sebelum Fajar, sebuah film karya Garin Nugroho,” Tissa wrote in the caption of her Instagram post, as reported by ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Set in Indonesia in 1946, Merah Sebelum Fajar follows five people from different backgrounds as they travel across a newly independent Indonesia while carrying an important document.

Their journey, however, is far from straightforward. Along the way, they encounter suspicion from people who are supposedly fighting for the same cause, creating tension and uncertainty as they navigate the turbulent early years of the republic.

The first-look images also introduce several prominent names from Indonesia’s film industry, including Nicholas Saputra, known for Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? and Gie; Bront Palarae, who starred in Ghost in the Cell; Laura Basuki, known for 3 Hati, Dua Dunia, Satu Cinta; and Nagra Pakusadewo, who has appeared in Empat Musim Pertiwi and Laut Bercerita.

Despite the growing anticipation surrounding the project, the official theatrical release date for Merah Sebelum Fajar has yet to be announced.

The film also marks another collaboration between Garin Nugroho and several actors with whom he has previously worked. Garin and Nicholas Saputra previously teamed up for the 2025 historical musical film Siapa Dia, with Garin serving as director and Nicholas as one of the cast members.

Tissa Biani herself has also previously crossed paths with Garin professionally. She appeared in the 2025 film Dilanjutkan Salah, Disudahi Perih, which featured a screenplay written by Garin.

Meanwhile, Merah Sebelum Fajar adds another chapter to Garin’s long-standing creative connection with veteran actor Tio Pakusadewo. Tio previously worked with Garin in the 1991 film Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti, where he played the character Topan. His son, Nagra Pakusadewo, is now part of the cast of Garin’s latest project.

With its historical setting, ensemble cast, and Garin Nugroho at the helm, Merah Sebelum Fajar is shaping up as one of the upcoming Indonesian films to watch. More details, including its official release date, are expected to be announced in the future.
