While international heavyweights pulled massive crowds on Friday, the local lineup at the myBCA International Java Jazz Festival 2026 delivered some of the most emotional and high-energy sets of Day 1. The new NICE venue in PIK 2 provided a massive playground, but it was the Indonesian artists who truly made it feel like home.
From jazz veterans like Chandra Darusman and Barry Likumahuwa celebrating career milestones, to pop powerhouses like Dira Sugandi and Mahalini drawing massive sing-alongs, the local roster was incredibly stacked.
The outdoor JBL stage became the perfect early hangout spot. Sore ze band took over the space in the afternoon, delivering their signature breezy, cinematic pop. It was a masterclass in setting the festival mood, giving fans a laid-back sanctuary under the sun before the nighttime chaos kicked in.
Inside the halls, the biggest news of the night came from veteran acid jazz outfit The Groove. Rumors had been floating around for a while, but the band finally made it official on stage: Tiara Effendy is now their permanent vocalist. After spending the last four years grinding on the road as an additional singer for the group, Tiara’s official promotion felt incredibly earned. The crowd’s reaction was loud and genuinely heartwarming, marking a fresh, exciting chapter for the legendary band.
Elsewhere on the festival grounds, The Lantis hit a major personal milestone. Friday marked their third time playing Java Jazz, and the growth was impossible to ignore. They no longer looked like an indie band just happy to be on the poster. They owned the stage, commanding the audience with the confidence of seasoned pros and proving exactly why they keep getting invited back.
If you were looking for pure nostalgia, Bilal Indrajaya and The Corleones had the perfect cure. Instead of sticking strictly to their usual catalog, they threw a massive curveball by delivering a full tribute to The Beatles. Hearing thousands of fans at a Jakarta jazz festival belting out classic Liverpool anthems was a surreal, beautiful moment that bridged generations.
But if we are talking about pure sweat and adrenaline, RAN took the crown back at the JBL stage.
They did exactly what they do best: turning a massive concert space into an intimate, sweaty dance floor. The trio kept the tempo relentlessly high, running through their hits before dropping the ultimate surprise. They brought out NPD and Neida (ex-HIVI!) for a chaotic, brilliant collaboration that pushed the crowd over the edge. It was loud, fast, and the perfect way to cap off the night.
Day 1 made one thing very clear. The international names might look great on the billboard, but the local acts are the actual heartbeat of Java Jazz. If this is the kind of energy the Indonesian artists are bringing on Friday, we are in for a wild weekend.
