Jakarta World Cinema (JWC) is back for its third edition in 2024. This year’s JWC brings a greater spirit and presents a variety of interesting programs.
This year’s JWC will screen a total of 120 films from 61 countries. This international film festival takes place from September 21 to September 28, 2024.
JWC is held offline at the CGV Cinema in Grand Indonesia Mall, Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, as well as online through the KlikFilm streaming platform, providing wider access for audiences throughout Indonesia.
JWC 2024 will open with a screening of Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, a work that has garnered attention at various international festivals.
Meanwhile, as the festival comes to a close, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, a film that has been eagerly anticipated by many movie fans, will be the final meaningful treat. With twice as many films as last year, JWC 2024 has collaborated with CGV to allocate four auditoriums to accommodate the screenings.
This is a significant increase from the two auditoriums in the previous year, reflecting the enthusiasm and high demand from the public.

For the first two years JWC existed as a non-competition film festival. This year, JWC introduces the First Feature Competition, an important step to encourage and reward new talents in film.
The competition will screen 13 debut films from various countries to compete for two awards, namely Best Director and Best Film. Meanwhile, festival-goers can also become jurors by voting for the films that will later be rewarded with the Audience Award trophy.
In this competition session, three very influential judges in Indonesian cinema, Lola Amaria, Yosep Anggi Noen, and Makbul Mubarak will give their assessment.
International Guest Attendance
The festival will also be attended by international filmmakers who bring their works to be screened and discussed at JWC 2024.
These include Selman Nacar, director of Hesitation Wound from Turkey; Jianjie Lin, director of Brief History of a Family from China; and Nelicia Low, director of Pierce from Singapore.

“This year is a milestone for JWC with our first competition. We want to provide a platform for new filmmakers to show their work to the world, and Jakarta World Cinema is one of the right places for that,” she explained, when met at FX Sudirman, Jakarta on Thursday (22/8).
Meanwhile, Shandy Gasella, Festival Director of JWC said the addition of the auditorium and the number of films screened is a form of our commitment to continue to grow.
“Making JWC an inclusive and diverse film festival. We hope this year’s festival will provide an unforgettable cinematic experience for all,” said Shandy.
Jakarta World Cinema 2024 promises to be a celebration of cinema full of surprises, and of course an appreciation of quality film works.
