The South Korean film Firefighters is set to hit Indonesian cinemas starting February 7, 2025. The film was released in its home country on December 4 of last year. Based on a true story, it tells the struggle of firefighters on the front lines during the Hongje-dong fire incident in March 2001.

The distributor, BY4M Studio, announced that the film had completed shooting in 2020. However, its release was delayed by four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons. After its premiere in South Korea, the film successfully attracted over 3 million viewers in less than 24 days.

As part of a social campaign, the Firefighters production team also launched the “119 Won Donation Challenge,” where 119 won from each ticket sold will be donated to support the construction of the National Firefighters Hospital, scheduled to open in 2025.

Synopsis and Cast of Firefighters

According to Allkpop, Firefighters is directed by Kwak Kyung-taek. The director shared that he aimed to convey the emotions of the Hongje-dong fire survivors in the film after hearing their heartbreaking stories.

The film stars renowned actors and actresses such as Joo Won, Kwak Do-won, Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Yoo-young, Lee Jun-hyuk, and many others.

The story follows the journey of a firefighting team from the Western Fire Station, who risk their lives to save people trapped in a large fire. Facing various challenges like limited equipment, dangerous conditions, and time pressure, they continue to fight with bravery and dedication.

The firefighting team works quickly to put out the fire in the Hongje-dong housing complex and tries to rescue those trapped inside the building. The released trailer shows the dedication and determination of the firefighters, depicted in lines like, “If I fail, that person will die.”

The firefighting team includes rookie firefighter Cheol Woong (Joo Won), rescue team leader In Ki (Yoo Jae-myung), and paramedic Seo Hee (Lee Yoo-young). There are also other firefighter characters such as Yong Tae (Kim Min-jae), Hyo Jong (Oh Dae-hwan), and Gi Cheol (Lee Jun-hyuk).

The release of Firefighters faced several delays due to various factors. Initially, shooting, which began in May 2020, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, one of the lead actors, Kwak Do-won, was involved in a controversy over drunk driving, which further extended the film’s release delay.

After overcoming these obstacles, Firefighters was finally released on December 4, 2024, and is now showing globally.
