Korean Film Harbin: Synopsis, Release Schedule, and Cast List

The latest Korean film, produced by CJ Entertainment, titled Harbin, is set to be released in Indonesia in early 2025.

Harbin is a colossal South Korean film that tells the story of an independence activist set in the 1990s. The film completed its shooting process in 2022 and had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2024. The film is directed by Woo Min Ho, who previously succeeded with The Man Standing Next (2020).

In addition, Harbin will feature a number of popular South Korean actors and actresses, such as Hyun Bin and Park Jung Min. The film is set against the historical backdrop of Harbin, China, in the 1990s. It is inspired by the history of South Korea during the time it was under Japanese rule and is packed with a thrilling storyline.

The story begins when Korean Empire General Ahn Jung Geun travels to various countries to regain the throne of the Korean Empire. He is accompanied by his comrades Woo Deok Soon, Kim Sang Hyun, and Madam Gong. These four characters, each with different roles and backgrounds, unite to reclaim power and end the suffering of the Korean people.

Starring Hyun Bin, Park Jeong-min, Jo Woo-jin, and Jeon Yeo-been, Harbin is scheduled to release in Indonesia starting January 1, 2025.

Within just two days of its release, the film attracted one million viewers and became a hot topic among film enthusiasts. This success was confirmed by CJ ENM studio and the Korean Film Council on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

The success of Harbin became apparent from the very first day of its release, with 380,000 tickets sold and dominating 63 percent of the screens in South Korea. The film even surpassed Firefighters at the top of the box office, marking an incredible debut at the end of 2024. According to data from the Korean Film Council, the revenue from 380,000 tickets amounted to US$2.4 million. This figure reflects the strong enthusiasm from viewers for the story of Ahn Jung-geun, a South Korean independence activist, which is the focus of the film.

This impressive achievement on the first day also set a record for the highest ticket sales in South Korea since the COVID-19 pandemic. Harbin even outperformed the debut of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, which recorded 359,000 viewers on its first day of release. Harbin surpassed this figure in just two days.

According to Money Today, Harbin reached one million viewers faster than Avatar 2. The James Cameron-directed film took three days to reach the same number, while Harbin only needed two days. This success also surpassed the debut of 12.12: The Day, which attracted 219,000 viewers in November 2023, and The Phantom of the Valley, which reached 336,000 viewers when released in January 2023.
