Visinema Officially Announces Epic Film “The Java War,” Highlighting the Heroic Struggle of Prince Diponegoro

Visinema, one of Indonesia’s leading production houses, has just announced its highly anticipated new film project titled “The Java War.” This film will bring to life the heroic story of the Diponegoro War — one of the most significant uprisings by the Javanese people against Dutch colonial rule, which took place from 1825 to 1830.

During this fierce conflict, Prince Diponegoro led his people in a courageous fight against the Dutch forces commanded by General Hendrik Merkus de Kock. The Java War symbolizes the nation’s struggle to reclaim independence and uphold its dignity.

The epic film will be directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, founder and director of Visinema, with Gita Wirjawan serving as executive producer. Speaking at a press conference in Senayan on Monday (July 21, 2025), Angga shared that the idea of bringing the history of the Java War to the screen had long been discussed with Gita, but he only now feels fully ready.“Making an epic historical film requires strong mental preparation and maturity as a director. If I had made this film five years ago, I wouldn’t have been ready. But after gaining experience from previous films, I feel much more prepared now,” Angga explained.

As Visinema’s first war genre film, Angga emphasized their commitment to in-depth research and careful craftsmanship.“At Visinema, we always tell important stories. Diponegoro is a truly significant figure, so we will approach this project with great care and wholehearted dedication,” he added.

“The Java War” is designed as a gateway for audiences to gain a deeper understanding of Prince Diponegoro and the nation’s history of struggle. Angga hopes the film will inspire other initiatives such as books, exhibitions, and educational works that enrich public knowledge of the country’s heritage.“Film is not the only medium to tell stories, but I believe it can deliver a spectacular experience that encourages viewers to explore Diponegoro’s story further,” Angga concluded.

This ambitious project is scheduled to begin production in early 2027, with a planned theatrical release in 2028. It is a highly anticipated work set to showcase the spirit of patriotism and heroism on the big screen in Indonesia.
