After the success of The Medium (2021), Thai filmmakers are ready to haunt horror movie fans again with the release of a film titled The Cursed Land. The Cursed Land presents a psychological horror film that touches on ethnic and political conflicts occurring in Thailand. Written and directed by Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee, the film tells the supernatural events experienced by a family who moves into an old haunted house in a Muslim community. Their relocation invites terror and curses from the past.

The Cursed Land was first introduced at the Rotterdam International Film Festival from January 25 to February 4, 2024. The film is touted as a horror movie that promises a thrilling and intense viewing experience. It features prominent Malaysian actor Bront Palarae, known for his roles in films like Pengabdi Setan, Gundala, and My Stupid Boss. Additionally, well-known Thai actors Ananda Everingham and Jennis Oprasert participated in the film.

The story follows a widower named Mit (Ananda Everingham) and his teenage daughter, May (Jennis Oprasert), who are forced to move to the outskirts of Bangkok after the tragic death of Mit’s wife. Mit is a skeptical figure who does not believe in the supernatural. His indifference leads him to ignore the warnings of the local residents and to remove charms placed in their new home.

Mit’s reckless actions unleash a 200-year-old ancient curse. From that moment on, the peaceful life of Mit and May is disturbed by a vengeful and angry supernatural entity. Every day, they must confront terrifying phenomena that defy rational explanation.

The disturbances from the spirits cause Mit’s mental state to decline. He begins to be possessed by an evil spirit that threatens his life. After a Buddhist monk fails to improve the situation, Mit and May, filled with fear and concern, decide to seek help from a Muslim shaman. Their rescue efforts lead them into unexpected secrets and adventures. The area they inhabit turns out to have been the site of a bloody conflict in the 19th century.
