Plainsong Live as the promoter announced London-based band, Bombay Bicycle Club (BBC), as the main headline of Joyland Festival Jakarta 2024 in the phase 1 lineup. Bombay Bicycle Club is one of the names that has been rumored to be one of the Joyland Jakarta 2024 lineups.
The speculation began after Joyland gave a little leak on their Instagram, which featured an animation with a Bombay Bicycle Club song in the background. Apart from BBC, other big names were also announced to play at Joyland Jakarta 2024. They first came to Indonesia in 2011, and this time they will come with a bigger discography and a show full of nostalgia and energy as they perform classics like “Always Like This”, “Shuffle” and “Luna” alongside material from their latest album One Big Day including “Diving” and “Meditate.” “We reached out to Bombay Bicycle Club in January 2024, and reached an agreement in no time,” said Ferry Dermawan, Program Director of Joyland Festival.
Another British pop band, Blueboy will also perform in Jakarta in November, an indie pop band formed in Reading in 1989 and briefly under the care of Sarah Records, a legendary independent record company in the early ’90s. After releasing three albums and a number of singles, including “Too Good to Be True”, “Always There” and “Joy of Living”, Blueboy disbanded in 1999, followed by the death of co-founder Keith Girdler in 2007.
Then in late 2023, Paul Stewart, one of Blueboy’s founding members reactivated the band and organized a reunion with Gemma Townley, Mark Cousens and Martin Rose who had been members of the band in the ’90s.
On May 18, 2024, Blueboy released “One,” their first single in 25 years, and on the same day they held a special show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Unisex. Thanks to attending the show, Ferry invited Blueboy to perform at Joyland.
“We are very happy to be at Joyland Festival. It’s a great honor and we can’t wait to see you guys!” said Gemma Townley on Blueboy’s Instagram account. Japanese instrumental band Mono also joined the party.
After four visits between 2008 and 2022, MONO’s performance at Joyland will witness the love between the band and their fans in Indonesia.
In addition to iconic works such as “Halcyon (Beautiful Days)” and “Ashes in the Snow”, MONO will also perform songs from Oath, their 12th album which will be released in June and recorded with the recently deceased legend, Steve Albini. Interestingly, in this phase 1 lineup, Joyland Festival has only announced a list of international performers, such as Real Estate, Balming Tiger, Automatic, Brainstory, and John Carroll Kirby.
In addition to the big names mentioned above, there will of course be other performers announced in the next phase.
