“Racun Sangga: Santet Pemisah Rumah Tangga” is the latest collaboration between producer Sunil Soraya and director Rizal Mantovani. The two have previously worked together on beloved films such as “5 cm” (2012), “Supernova” (2012), and “Eiffel I’m in Love 2” (2018). In their latest collaboration, Soraya and Mantovani bring a terrifying tale based on the true story of a married couple in Kalimantan who become victims of the “racun sangga” witchcraft.

Adapted from a viral thread on X/Twitter written by @gustigina, “Racun Sangga: Santet Pemisah Rumah Tangga” portrays the cruelty and dark side of human nature, where someone would resort to black magic for love—even against a couple who are just newly married.

On February 12, 2021, Maya (Frederika Cull) and Andi (Fahad Haydra) were married after a month-long ta’aruf (introduction) process. Just after moving into their new home and starting their new life, they begin to experience strange occurrences. They discover dead animals around the house, hear objects falling on the roof, and feel an oppressive heat that affects Andi.

Andi begins to suffer from various ailments, experiencing terrible dreams, hallucinations, and hearing disturbing sounds. His condition worsens, and he begins coughing up blood, unable to stand or walk. Maya, who is pregnant, must take care of him. They seek both medical and alternative treatments to save Andi, but his condition continues to deteriorate, putting both their lives at risk. This sinister witchcraft attack continues, and their nightmare is far from over. This is a true story!

“We want to bring something new and different to the Indonesian horror genre. Our collaboration with Rizal Mantovani is an effort by Soraya Intercine Films to continuously innovate and offer unexpected thrills to the audience. Through ‘Racun Sangga: Santet Pemisah Rumah Tangga’, we aim to present a story that not only thrills but also explores the dark side of humanity—how someone driven by vengeance can resort to wicked acts like black magic,” said the producer of the film, Sunil Soraya.

The lead actors, Fahad Haydra and Frederika Cull, who portray the married couple Andi and Maya, shared the challenges they faced in playing roles in a horror film where the terror felt very real. According to Fahad and Frederika, “Racun Sangga: Santet Pemisah Rumah Tangga” will be a unique horror film that presents the horrors of witchcraft (black magic).

“Portraying Andi was a completely new and unique experience for me. In this film, Andi suffers from a terror that spreads throughout his body, and to create a realistic effect, we had to apply special makeup effects. To immerse myself in the character, I even performed all the stunts that could have been done by a stuntman because I wanted to truly feel the pain Andi experienced,” said Fahad Haydra, discussing his role as Andi.

“To play Maya, I did research by meeting the real Maya. Listening to her story and learning about the emotional experience she went through gave me a better understanding of what Maya felt and the horror she faced. This is what I tried to translate into my acting in this film,” added Frederika Cull.

Director Rizal Mantovani mentioned that his collaboration with Sunil Soraya would produce a horror film that will shock the audience. Rizal wants to deliver a terrifying horror experience centered around witchcraft that torments a newlywed couple.

“Racun Sangga is a witchcraft meant to separate. The effects of this witchcraft won’t stop until the married couple is truly torn apart. Through the story of Andi and Maya, I want to show the cruelty of revenge by someone whose love is unrequited, expressed through the terror of witchcraft,” said Rizal Mantovani, director of “Racun Sangga: Santet Pemisah Rumah Tangga.”

Who is the perpetrator behind the witchcraft attacking the married couple? Will the perpetrator succeed in tearing them apart?
