Netflix is ready to bring audiences another exciting Korean series with the arrival of *The WONDERfools*, premiering this Friday, May 15. Set against the nostalgic backdrop of 1999, the drama blends comedy, adventure, fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling into one entertaining ride that promises both laughter and emotion.
The series follows a group of quirky small-town residents often dismissed as “neighborhood misfits.” Their ordinary lives suddenly take an extraordinary turn when they unexpectedly gain unique superpowers. Forced to work together, the unlikely team must protect the world from dangerous villains amid the growing anxiety surrounding the arrival of a new millennium.
One of the biggest highlights of The WONDERfools is the reunion between director Yoo In-sik and actress Park Eun-bin after the massive global success of Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Known for creating emotionally rich stories with uplifting energy, Yoo In-sik described the series as an experience similar to visiting an amusement park.
“Just like riding an attraction at a theme park, I hope viewers feel excited from the moment they fasten their seatbelts,” he shared. “And after all the fun, I hope there’s still a warm and sincere feeling left in their hearts.”
Park Eun-bin stars as Eun Chae-ni, a troublemaker known for causing chaos around town who suddenly gains the power of teleportation. During a press conference in South Korea on May 12, the actress revealed how enjoyable it was to step into her character’s unique personality.
“Chae-ni has a very simple way of thinking, so entering her world was incredibly fun for me,” she explained.
The series also introduces several equally unusual heroes. Im Seong-jae plays Kang Robin, a man who unexpectedly develops incredible physical strength, while Choi Dae-hoon portrays Son Gyeong-hun, a character shocked to discover that his hands can mysteriously stick to objects.
Meanwhile, Cha Eun-woo takes on the role of Lee Un-jeong, an awkward civil servant with telekinetic abilities — the power to move and manipulate objects using only his mind. Because of his extraordinary skills, he earns the nickname “master” and becomes the reluctant leader of the eccentric trio as they embark on their chaotic mission.
The story becomes even more intense with the appearance of the powerful Wunderkinder group, whose members possess dangerous supernatural abilities of their own. Seok Ju-ran can manipulate people’s minds through carefully crafted expressions and tone of voice. The youngest member, Seok Ho-ran, may appear immature but proves remarkably agile and efficient. Completing the trio is Kim Pal-ho, played by Bae Na-ra, who uses gravity-based powers to eliminate any obstacle standing in his way.
Despite its absurd and comedic premise, the cast believes the drama delivers much more than simple entertainment. Choi Dae-hoon described the series as “a little silly, but very well-made and incredibly fun,” while Park Eun-bin encouraged audiences by saying, “If you need a break from the complexities of the world, watch The WONDERfools!”
With its nostalgic late-90s setting, lovable characters, hilarious chemistry, and imaginative superpower action, The WONDERfools looks set to become one of Netflix’s most refreshing Korean releases this year.
Don’t miss the premiere of The WONDERfools starting Friday, May 15, exclusively on Netflix.
