The film “Tulang Belulang Tulang,” directed by Sammaria Sari Simanjuntak and Lies Nanci Supangkat, produced by Adhya Pictures and Pomp Pictures, is ready to hit theaters on September 26, 2024. “Tulang Belulang Tulang” stands as a testament to the success of the incubation program Indonesiana Film 2021, organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) to support community initiatives in the cultural sector.
As cited from a press release by Kemendikbudristek on September 19, 2024, the Director General of Culture, Hilmar Farid, stated that the screening of “Tulang Belulang Tulang” in theaters signifies the strengthening and preservation of the Indonesian film ecosystem. The ministry is committed to supporting and facilitating Indonesian filmmakers to continue developing, especially through the programs they implement.
Hilmar also expressed appreciation for “Tulang Belulang Tulang,” which emerged from the Indonesiana Film 2021 incubation program, now set to premiere in Indonesian cinemas soon. Kemendikbudristek ensures that the government will always support local filmmakers to create works that reinforce the national film ecosystem.
“Tulang Belulang Tulang” tells the story of a Batak family wishing to perform the Mangokal Holi tradition, which involves moving the bones of their ancestors by excavating graves to collect the remaining bones and placing them in a monument. However, the suitcase containing their great-grandfather’s bones goes missing at the airport.
The family must urgently find the missing bones, as failing to do so will incur a curse from their grandmother and the entire extended family, who are eagerly awaiting a celebration at Lake Toba. This journey to find the lost bones becomes the driving force of the film’s narrative.
