700 Teenagers Audition for Rangga & Cinta Film, Rangga’s Character Found in Makassar

After the announcement on Miles Films’ social media channels and the Rangga & Cinta film two days ago, the casting of iconic characters in the Rangga & Cinta movie has sparked a lively discussion among netizens. The film, a remake of the 2002 movie Ada Apa dengan Cinta?, directed by Riri Riza and produced by Mira Lesmana, Nicholas Saputra, and Toto Prasetyanto, will feature fresh faces, most of whom are making their big-screen debut.

The new cast includes El Putra Sarira as Rangga, Leya Princy as Cinta, Jasmine Nadya as Alya, Kyandra Sembel as Maura, Katyana Mawira as Milly, Daniella Tumiwa as Karmen, Rafly Altama as Mamet, and Rafi Sudirman as Borne. These names join a long list of young talents discovered by Miles Films who have successfully made their mark in Indonesia’s entertainment industry.

“To find them, our journey was quite long. The audition process was conducted in several stages over about six months, from April to September last year. More than 700 teenagers auditioned,” said producer Mira Lesmana during a press conference at XXI Plaza Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (28/2).

One of the longest processes was finding the right new Rangga. Director Riri Riza explained that Rangga’s character is an ‘outsider’ in his environment. “So, we were looking for an outsider persona that could be really interesting and captivating. It took a lot of consideration and feelings to make the decision,” said Riri Riza.

“When we found El, it was unique because he was from outside Jakarta. He’s studying in Makassar, so he’s not from the entertainment world, he’s a student. Honestly, the first person to feel strongly about it was Nicho (Nicholas Saputra). So, Nicho said, ‘I think this is him, let’s fly him over,’” Mira added.

Currently, Rangga & Cinta is still in the process of filming, which will take a total of 42 production days. The movie is expected to be released in theaters later this year.
