This Ramadan, Indonesian cinemas will be graced with an emotional drama from Kyrgyzstan titled Paradise at Mother’s Feet (Surga di Telapak Kaki Ibu). The film tells a heartwarming story of the bond between a mother and her son, stirring emotions through their touching journey.
An interesting fact about Paradise at Mother’s Feet is that it has been chosen to represent Kyrgyzstan at the 97th Academy Awards (Oscar 2025) in the Best International Feature Film category.
The film follows the story of Adil, a 35-year-old man who lives with his 75-year-old mother, Raikhan, in a small village in Kyrgyzstan. Witnessing her son’s condition, Raikhan often tells Adil that she will go to paradise soon. However, Adil refuses to enter paradise without his mother by his side.
This brings sadness to Raikhan, and one day, she hears that she could enter paradise with Adil if she fulfills the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Raikhan makes a bold decision—she decides to embark on a journey to Mecca with Adil, traveling on foot. Adil loyally accompanies her, pulling a cart for his elderly mother.
Their journey from Kyrgyzstan to Mecca is filled with immense hardships, as they must cross seven countries, including Syria, which is embroiled in conflict. Their lives are at risk as they pass through war-torn regions.
Will Adil be able to reach Mecca and help his mother enter paradise?
Directed by Ruslan Akun, Paradise at Mother’s Feet features a talented cast of Kyrgyzstan actors. The cast includes:
- Emil Esenaliev as Adil
- Anarkul Nazarkulova as Raikhan
- Bolot Tentimyshov
Although Paradise at Mother’s Feet was released almost a year ago, on April 11, 2024, in Russia and Uzbekistan, it will finally make its debut in Indonesian theaters. The film is scheduled to be released on March 19, 2025, perfectly timed for the Ramadan season.
