The film Petaka Gunung Gede by Starvision will soon be released in theaters in February 2025. The film is adapted from the real-life story of Maya Azka and her late friend, Ita, during a hiking trip on Mount Gede in 2007. This story went viral in 2022 after being shared on a YouTube channel.
Producer Chand Parwez revealed that the filming process was quite intense, as the actors had to hike directly on Mount Gede. “They carried their bags and climbed Mount Gede to film there. This film is very real, it’s more or less what it’s like to climb a mountain,” said Chand Parwez during a press conference at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, on Friday (31/1/2025).
Mithu Nisar, another producer of the film, shared similar thoughts.
“Of course, this offers an interesting story. Not only did they shoot with a new experience, but they also had the chance to heal on the mountain. The shooting was really tough,” said Mithu. Meanwhile, director Azhar Kinoi Lubis praised the actors for successfully overcoming the challenging filming process. Some locations on Mount Gede, such as Surya Kencana and Telaga Biru, became the backdrop for the film. “The shooting was incredible. I was worried whether the actors’ spirits would drop. At the time, I told Mr. Parwez, ‘We have to go up the mountain, Sir. I was thinking, how do we climb up now? Are they still strong enough?’” said Azhar.
“It was amazing, we were helped by 150 porters, and for a week, we camped at Surya Kencana and the side of Telaga Biru,” he added.
This film stars Adzana Ashel, Arla Ailani, Arfian, Raihan Khan, Moh. Iqbal Sulaiman, Jeremie Moeremans, Razan Zu, Teuku Rifnu Wikana, Mieke Amalia, Umar Lubis, Meisya Siregar, Ruth Marini, Derry Oktami, Ratna Riantiarno, Andi Bersama, and many others. Petaka Gunung Gede tells the story of two friends, Maya and Ita, who spend their school holiday hiking Mount Gede.
What initially seemed like a fun trip turns into a disaster. During their journey, Ita is said to have violated local customs by hiking while menstruating. Ita is believed to have disturbed the mountain’s guardian, which leads to a series of mystical events. Petaka Gunung Gede will be released simultaneously in theaters across Indonesia on February 6, 2025.
