The new Korean film The Land of Happiness, starring Jo Jung Suk, Yoo Jae Myung, and the late Lee Sun Gyun hits theaters from August 14, 2024. Officially releasing its new trailer and poster, The Land of Happiness tells the story of lawyer Jung In Hoo (Jo Jung Suk), who fights to save Park Tae Joo (Lee Sun Gyun) from a life-or-death situation in the 1979 presidential assassination trial. The Land of Happiness is based on a real-life incident, where former President Park Chung Hee was assassinated on October 26, 1979.
The first poster captures the three main characters involved in the presidential assassination trial: lawyer Jung In Hoo; Park Tae Joo, chief secretary to the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency; and Jeon Sang Doo (Yoo Jae Myung), head of the Joint Investigation Department.
Jung In Hoo’s determined yet earnest expression reflects his sincere desire to save Park Tae Joo. “In the 1979 presidential assassination trial, there is someone who must be saved,” reads the caption on the poster. Despite being subjected to an unfair trial because she is a soldier, Park Tae Joo maintains her integrity and firmly upholds her beliefs, but when she meets Park In Hoo, she slowly reveals her true feelings. The poster hints at Park Tae Joo’s changing emotions as she sees Jung In Hoo’s sincere efforts to defend her.
Meanwhile, Jeon Sang Doo evokes tension with his piercing gaze full of ambition to gain more power.
The second poster, presented in black and white, features Jung In Hoo delivering a passionate argument in court and Park Tae Joo standing tall with a determined expression.
Jung In Hoo demands a fair trial from a judge influenced by secret orders from powerful figures, while Park Tae Joo remains firm in her beliefs despite the unfairness of the trial.
The accompanying trailer opens with a voiceover that reveals Park Tae Joo’s state of mind before the murder. The trailer then depicts the murder, Jung In Hoo’s initial distrust of Park Tae Joo, and the subsequent unfair trial. Jung In Hoo initially defends Park Tae Joo for the sake of his reputation and personal gain.
However, his heart slowly changes as he witnesses the unfair trial led by Commander Jeon Sang Doo and Park Tae Joo’s refusal to give favorable testimony in order to maintain her military integrity and loyalty to her superiors. The trailer also shows glimpses of Park Tae Joo’s wife Ok Jung Ae (Kang Mal Geum) and Jung In Hoo’s girlfriend Jo Soon Jung (Jin Ki Joo). Finally, the trailer ends with a scene where Park Tae Joo praises Jung In Hoo by telling him, “You are a real lawyer.” The new Korean film The Land of Happiness, starring Jo Jung Suk, Yoo Jae Myung, and the late Lee Sun Gyun is in theaters since August 14, 2024 in Korea and will be in Indonesian theaters on September 04.
